Why Fall is the Best Time to be a Fly Angler

By: Aug 30, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Fall is undoubtedly my favorite time to get out and fish.  Sure, wet wading during the summer months always has it's allure, and the quality of fishing to be had in the spring is unmatched.  There is just something about spending time on a river as the fall colors begin to bleed across a mountainous landscape.

Rod Review - Sage ACCEL Fly Rod

By: Aug 09, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Over the course of the last decade, fly rod manufacturers have seemed to be solely dedicated to designing fast action fly rods.  Sure these rods are have been light, powerful and amazingly accurate, but not every fishing situation dictates that one needs this action of fly rod.  Think about it, when was the last time you had to cast 70 feet, into a 30 mph headwind, to catch a trout?   So when Sage announced the debut of the ACCEL fly rod series in July, I was curiously...

Trip Report - Float Fishing the Colorado River

By: Jul 11, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
With Baby Ladd due to makes it's grand debut in roughly 4 weeks, the wife and I decided to head to the High Country for a couple days of float fishing on the Colorado River.  Flows were on the fall from roughly 3,000 cfs to around 2,500 cfs, with a majority of the drop coming from decreased releases from Green Mountain and Williams Fork Reservoirs.  The water was clear, the bugs were popping all day, and the trout were as happy and healthy as I've seen in years.  It's...

Trip Report - Fishing Cheesman Canyon at High Water

By: Jul 03, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Being creatures of habit, it's understandable that anglers sometimes have a hard time adjusting to change.  We get used to seeing and fishing rivers during certain conditions, and when these conditions change it can be difficult to adjust how you're fishing to remain productive.  This scenario has proven particularly true this year with the abundance of water flowing through our States rivers and steams, all thanks to a record snowpack from the winter season.  This in...

By: Jun 23, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd

A Fly Fisherman’s Guide to Fishing Post Runoff

By: Jun 21, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Substantial runoff years like we're currently experiencing are really a blessing in disguise.  On one hand it's nothing but a burden on fisherman, as the high and off-color rivers impede our desire need to fish.  Yet at the same time the abundance of water will help guarantee an explosive late-summer fishing season, as well as reservoirs and rivers that will be flush full of cool mountain water.  So the big question on the first day of summer is when will the 2014 runoff...

Fly Fishing Report: The Blue River at Silverthorne

By: Jun 21, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
The Blue at Silverthorne is still a little higher than the 51 year median average and currently sits at 701 cfs. When I fished the Blue at Silverthorne on Wednesday the levels were a little higher at 812 cfs but fished exceptionally well all things considered. I moved up and downstream from Silverthorne and had the best luck in the slower moving pools after the longer whitewater runs. I only fished for a couple of hours but the time was very productive as I adjusted weight and strike indicator...

Fly Fishing Report: The Colorado River

By: Jun 20, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Every once in a while you have a day of fishing that inspires you.  These are the days when everything comes together the way you expect it to, yet still offers welcome surprises in the way of an empty river, hungry fish, and wonderful company.  For me, this is what makes fly fishing such a wonderful pursuit, and will forever have me coming back for more.

Fly Fishing Report: The Rio Grande River

By: Jun 18, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Trouts Fly Fishing just wrapped up our annual hosted trip to the Rio Grande River.  This trip has proven to be a great fly fishing adventure in the past and this year it was no exception. The big question on everyone’s mind as we packed up our gear and headed out the door: with the abnormally high flows this year across the state, what was the river going to look like and more importantly… would we find the bugs?

Salmonfly Season

By: Jun 10, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
This past weekend we chased the salmonflies again.  A few buddies of mine concocted what I thought was a pretty ingenious plan all built on speculation, google-maps-conjecture, and supposition.  In the end, I found out that it is still pretty hard to triangulate mother nature.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. Fly Fishing For Carp: Stillwater Edition

By: Jun 09, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
It looks like many rivers in central Colorado might have reached their peak flows last week and have now begun to descend.  When flows are high, it is a great time to explore stillwater fisheries. Two weeks ago we talked a bit about fly fishing for carp in Denver’s South Platte River, this week we have a photo essay from some of our recent stillwater adventures.

South Platte Fly Fishing Report: June

By: Jun 05, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Fishing the South Platte River over the past week and a half has been dynamic.  This past Saturday, we saw a significant increase in flows during our On-Stream Beginner Fly Fishing School.  The river was high when we arrived and we saw it increase throughout the day. The flows near Deckers actually quadrupled over a 24-hour period.  Even with rising water levels, the fishing was still good.
