This past Saturday Trouts joined our good friends at Denver Trout Unlimited and the Greenway Foundation to help clean up the South Platte River and help raise awareness about the $22 million river restoration project that is being launched to help improve our home water.
The main stem of the South Platte River continues to fish well as we push into spring and the flows continue to rise. Higher flows are dislodging a lot of debris, bugs and other organisms into the river and the water also has a nice stained color and fish are actively feeding throughout the day.
Trouts would like to thank all of our customers who signed up for our Hosted Trip to the Rio Grande River. This trip is officially sold out! If you missed out on this one, you can still sign up for our next hosted trip to the Rawah Ranch scheduled for July 11th-13th.
Destination travel is a very big interest for a lot of our customers here at Trouts Fly Fishing. We have some extremely seasoned anglers who spend a significant of time each year researching new destinations and returning to amazing fisheries across the globe. We also have a number of clients who are looking to branch out for the first time. From steelhead in the Pacific Northwest, redfish in Louisiana to chasing bonefish, permit and tarpon in the Caribbean, there is no doubt...

To meet some of the folks from Scott and to test cast the entire line of fly rods, stop by our Casting & Cocktails event tonight – April 24th - at Washington Park from 5-7pm. We’ll be at the South East corner of the park, the closest cross streets being Louisana and Gilpin. This...
Join our pals at Denver Trout Unlimited as they clean up the South Platte River here in Denver this Saturday April 26th at 7:00am. Bring your boots, waders, and a sturdy pair of work gloves. They will be cleaning up trash and debris both from the river bank and from the river bottom where it is possible. Here’s the DTU game plan for Saturday morning.
The main stem of the South Platte River continues to fish extremely well. The stream flows from below Cheesman Canyon have been fluctuating but the fishing has been consistent. Trouts Guide Service has been out on the water quite a bit throughout the month of April and the early spring conditions have been great. Here is a quick account from a few of our recent client trips.
Trouts would like to thank all of our clients who have signed up for both our Learn “The Basics” and our “On-Stream Beginner Fly Fishing School” in April. Both of these classes are now sold out. We do have a few openings in our upcoming classes in May. Our next class is being held Wednesday May 28th from 6-7pm here in the shop. As a great follow on to “Learn The Basics”, Trouts has 3 spots left for our “On-Stream Beginner...
We spent quite a bit of time getting prepared for barracuda before we left for our trip to South Andros Island (you can check out our how-to 'cuda rig videos on our blog as well). Once we were there, we spent more time stalking these aggressive fish on the flats - both on foot and from the boat. It took a little while to crack the code, but we were finally able to connect.
Outside Magazine just published a pretty crisp gear review on a few rods we carry here in the shop. You can check out what they say about the Scott Radian, The Helios 2 by Orvis, and the Sage ONE.
Don't miss today's Double Header: At 3:00pm MST join "Ask a Gear Head" sponsored by Simms and you will get a chance to win a brand new Headwaters Guide Hip Pack. At 6:00pm we're hosting a Saltwater 101 presentation where you can experience the sights and sounds of South Andros Island and relax with a cold Caribbean beer here in the shop.
Saturday was our first Intermediate Clinic of the 2014 season and focused on switch and spey casting techniques for both Colorado trout and salmon or steelhead for the traveling angler. The Lower Blue is flowing at a higher-than-average level and this created the perfect scenario for switch rods. The weather was warm with some clouds and the river flows 710 CFS with off color clarity.
Mosquito Lagoon just a the sun begins to rise When we left the dock at 5:30am it was dark out – pitch black. My guide, Captain John Turcot had approached from the south of Mosquito Lagoon and I could hear the whine of his Hell’s Bay skiff for a good two minutes before he reached me. As I watched him approach under the stars I could see that he held a hand torch to navigate the small creeks and cuts that riddle this inland waterway. We were getting a...
Cody Hoeckelberg will be giving a special presentation on Wednesday April 23rd from 6-7pm that is mindfully built for beginners who are interested in learning about fly fishing for the first time. The main goal of this class is to help you master basic knots and rigging. This class is also designed to help people understand basic fly rod and reel mechanics, what kind of waders and boots are necessary to navigate rivers in Colorado, the difference between nymphs, dry flies and...
Fishing trips are a special thing. The utter simplicity of walking away from your day to day life to focus on nothing more than fooling a fish to eat your fly. A time when the biggest decision you have to make is between 4X and 5X leaders, and what kind of meat you're going to throw on the girll that night. Is it a Makers night, or maybe should we throw ourselves a curve ball and bust out that bottle of Knob Creek? Awe yes, fishing trips are a special thing. My most...
What We Say I’m a big believer that having the right saltwater fly line matters. I’ve had lines that were too subtle and light which made casting in the wind difficult. I’ve also had lines that were great to cast in the wind but when they hit the water it was like a bomb exploding – and bonefish don’t like bombs exploding close by.
The last time I brought a brand new reel down to a saltwater environment without having fished it before, things did not end well. After the first fish I hooked took it on a blistering 150 yard run the reel failed and I struggled trying to hand line the fish in. I was not a happy camper.
What We Say My favorite trout rod here in Colorado is the Sage ONE 490-4. It is light – it is accurate – and I can use it in a variety conditions. I decided to see if the Sage ONE 890-4 would have the same attributes and chose it as my go-to saltwater fly rod on a recent trip to the Bahamas. I was happy with my decision.
Join Trouts Fly Fishing and Scott Fly Rods for our legendary Casting & Cocktails Event. This FREE casting clinic will be held in Washington Park April 24th from 5:00-7:00pm on the Southeast corner of the park right at the intersection of Louisiana and Gilpin. This is a fun event that is geared to help improve your fishing knowledge and skills with the sole purpose of getting you into more fish. This is also a great event if you are a novice fly angler or if you have never...

Trouts Fly Fishing is happy to announce the successful kick off of our 2014 Fly Fishing Education Curriculum. On Saturday March 29th we had our inaugural On-Stream Beginner Fly Fishing School where we were able to introduce the sport of fly fishing to a new group of students. The flows on the main stem of the South Platte River were right around 125 CFS and the water clarity was excellent. With clear water and temperatures right in the mid 50s it was classic springtime...
Our pals over at Gink And Gasoline and Nautilus Reels put together this time-lapse video of a reel being constructed. We spend quite a bit of time talking to our customers about machined aluminum reels that are designed, manufactured and tested right here in the United States. This video is a great example of how it is done.
Join Trouts Fly Fishing and Tucker Ladd and explore one of the most underrated and unique trout fisheries in the state of Colorado. Only TWO SPOTS LEFT! The San Luis Valley is Colorado’s largest mountain valley and the Rio Grande River is one of our state’s best-kept secrets. The window to float the Rio Grande is small and we’re going with guides who know this river like the back of their hands. If you have never had the chance to experience the Rio Grande by raft you...
Photo Courtesy of Tim Romano I’ll have to admit, when I first got wind of this story from the Field & Stream Fly Talk crew I was a bit suspect. Then… I saw the video.
Trouts Fly Fishing will be hosting a fly fishing trip for six (6) clients to the Rawah Ranch. Named for the rugged and majestic snow-capped peaks that rise above it and the untouched wilderness that surrounds it, Northern Colorado's Historic Rawah Ranch is located in one of the west's most scenic and unspoiled valleys in North America. The five species that you can have a shot at hooking include rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout as well as grayling.
My eyes had to adjust to what I was looking at. I hadn’t seen anything like it in almost 10 years. The large mass of grey/brown color could easily be mistaken for a patch of Caribbean turtle grass or coral… but it wasn’t turtle grass or coral. It was a massive school of Bahamian bonefish. “You see how those fish are starting to move to the left,” said Sparkles, our guide from the Andros South Lodge. “Show me the cast...
Don’t miss your chance to get the 2014 fly fishing season started off on right foot this Saturday, March 29th. Our On-Stream Beginner Fly Fishing School is a great way to learn how to fly fish from the ground up.
In our last two Simms Video Spotlights, we focused on the G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader and the Headwaters Guide Hip Pack. Today we’ll take a look at the Simms G3 Guide Boot. This wading boot is Bombproof… with a capital B.
Over the years, we’ve continued to build our selections of women’s gear and equipment. This includes women’s waders that are truly designed with women in mind. In this Video Spotlight, we’re happy to showcase the Women’s Silver Sonic Waders by Orvis.
I wanted to drop a quick note to the Trouts Contingent and deliver this preliminary fishing report from the Andros South Lodge. We left for the Bahamas on Friday evening, flying from Denver to Charlotte on a red eye. From there, we flew south to Nassau and connected with a puddle jumper over to Congo Town. After arriving at the Andros South Lodge, our team of seven clients were ready to get after it.
Here is a taste of flats and bonefish eye candy from our pals up at Simms Fly Fishing- not to mention a surprise species at the end. Enjoy...
We’ve been working with quite a few clients who are going to be traveling to salt water destinations. One natural element that anglers are often times challenged by – both here in Colorado in ocean fisheries – is wind. Here is a quick video created by the Orvis Company that gives a few solid tips on how to both overcome windy conditions, but also how to use the wind to your advantage.
With March nearly half way over, it's time to start looking forward to spring and summer, and the amazing fishing options these times of year have to offer. The winter of 2013/2014 has been tremendous, with ample snowfall across the state. While winter is certainly not over, it is fair to say that we are looking at a very healthy snowpack leading into our spring and summer fishing seasons. Currently we are at a Statewide Snowpack of 116% of the historical average, well...
Trouts Fly Fishing is always on the hunt for the best new fly fishing gear that gives our clients an edge on fly fishing. Earlier this year we came across the Bozeman Reel Company headquartered out of Bozeman, Montana. When we talk about reels, most often we focus on reliability, durability and performance. We’re happy to announce we are the first shop in Colorado to carry Bozeman Reels and become a dealer.
With our hosted trip to the Andros South Lodge in the Bahamas just a few short days away, most of our planning and preparation is behind us. We’re now in “pack it up” mode. Between rods, reels, lines, leaders, tippets, and flies – organization and planning can go a long way.
Our good pals over at Field and Stream’s Fly Talk are always sharing quick and easy to understand fly fishing tips. This one, about setting your hook downstream vs upstream, will help you avoid pulling your fly from a fish’s mouth and missing that connection.
Stop into Trouts Fly Fishing for your new 2014/2015 Colorado Fishing License. Don't forget: your 2013/2014 License Expires on March 31st, 2014. We can renew your existing Colorado Fishing license beginning tomorrow, March 12, very quickly here at the shop. Or, we can process a new fishing license if you have never purchased one before.
It looks like we’re officially off to a good start here in Central Colorado from a snow level perspective. “The Natural Resources Conservation Service, an agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, says as of March 1, Colorado snow levels are 16 percent above normal. The state should be in good shape even if the next few weeks do not bring as much snow as usual.” – Mike Lamp, Colorado Public Radio
If you've never connected with Trouts Fly Fishing, here is what it looks and feels like. Last fall, Trouts Fly Fishing and Guide Service headed out to the YR Ranch and spent a few days camping and fishing on the river - throwing both single and double handed rods. We had all kinds of weather and fishing conditions thrown at us. This quick video gives you a chance to experience what we saw on the water in high definition.
Trouts Fly Fishing continues to grow and we're looking to expand our team. We're looking for a Seasonal Full-Time Sales Associate to join our dynamic team of fly fishing subject matter experts. Class size is limited to six (6) anglers and we only have four (4) spots remaining.

This is a great way to meet and engage with other local anglers and if you want to help the South Platte River from a fishing perspective, Denver Trout Unlimited is the only game in...
Here is some very exciting and positive news that just was announced by the EPA. We're now one step closer to protecting Bristol Bay. Bristol Bay is a one-of-a-kind natural resource and provides the spawning habitat for the world’s largest sockeye salmon, as well as rainbow trout, dolly varden, arctic grayling and four other species of pacific salmon. Here is a brief excerpt from an Associated Press article that appeared in the Washington Post: “The watershed...
In Today’s Gear Short we’re going to show you the Simms Headwaters Guide Hip Pack. This fly fishing hip pack is designed and built to carry a lot of gear and take a beating.
Photo Courtesy of Chris S. There is nothing we like better then getting a fly fishing report from a customer after we have set them up with gear for an international fly fishing adventure. We just received this report from Chris S. who we first met back in January. “I just returned today from Christmas Island ... it was incredible,” said Chris. “Giant trevally, big bones, all kinds of other species ... including a Barracuda!”
When you travel internationally to go fly fishing, things don’t always go as planned. Actually, I take that back. Most of the time something, somewhere, somehow… things manage to go awry. It actually makes sense. You are going somewhere new, fishing for a new species, making tight connections, using new gear and exploring new water. Sometimes… sXit just happens.
We’re starting to see signs of spring fly conditions here in Colorado – albeit sporadically. One day, we’ll be in shirt sleeves with the sun shining and the next in down jackets with snow flying. It is after all Colorado and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Trouts Fly Fishing is excited to announce that Mark Lance will be stopping by the shop on Thursday March 13th from 6-7pm to give our customers a slide show presentation and photography clinic. Mark will be showing a slide show about llama trekking for Colorado River and Rio Grande cutthroats in the Weminuche Wilderness and also talking about some of the photography techniques he used to shoot the images. This is a free presentation here at the shop and a must-see-event if you have an...
hook·y - [hook-ee] - noun - Unjustifiable absence from school, work, etc. (usually used in the phrase play hooky): "On the first warm spring day, the boys played hooky from school to go fishing." – www.dictionary.com It is tough to call it hooky when the boss joins you on the river for a day of fly fishing on a Tuesday in February. But still… it felt a lot like hooky.
As we continue to move toward prime-time fly fishing season here in Colorado, we will continue to showcase the new products that have caught our attention. Next up, the new Simms G3 Guide Stockingfoot Waders.
The last knot that we are going to tie in our barracuda rig is the non-slip loop knot. This is a great knot to learn if you plan want to connect your fly with nylon, fluorocarbon or wire bite tippet and if you are looking to give your fly a lot of natural action in the water. The non-slip lip loop knot is a fast and efficient way to tie a knot that can be used in many different salt and fresh water situations.
Trouts Fly Fishing has had a great run here at 1303 East 6th Avenue since 2007, but it is now time to make a few upgrades. Trouts will be closed February 17, 18, and 19th for some shop improvements and renovations. Please bear with us during this time as we feel that you will really enjoy the improvements we make here at the shop. In the meantime, check out great gear and equipment on our online store. We'll be back open for business on Thursday February 20th at 10:00am.
The Albright knot is a great knot to learn if you plan on tying a custom leader using materials of varied test and tensile strength. We’ll cover the Albright knot in five easy steps.
When welded loops became common place on the terminal section of most premium fly lines, the perfection loop went from being a rather obscure knot, to one that is a must have for fly anglers of all skill levels. For our upcoming trip to the Bahamas, we’ll be tying some of our own leaders specifically for barracuda. Although some anglers dislike a loop-to-loop connection between their fly line and leader, we’ve found over the years, the benefits of a loop-to-loop...
We have to spots left for our Colorado Classics Fly Tying Class tomorrow night, Wednesday February 12. The class will be held from 5:00pm-7:00pm here in the shop. It is great to see and hear from our customers after their fly fishing trips. One of our big goals at Trouts Fly Fishing is to share what we know and our expertise so our clients can maximize their time on the water. Here’s is the latest customer fly fishing report, photo and shout-out we received: “Thank you guys for all the help! Anyone out there that wants to catch big fish...come to Trouts!!!!! January was a really busy month for us here at Trouts. Somehow, we forgot to share this article about the fly fishing prospects on the Arkansas River and the new Gold Medal water designation. As always, Scott Willoughby from the Denver Post delivers a great piece talking about why this is important for the Arkansas as well as the State of Colorado.
Every so often a piece of media will come across my desk that reminds me of the beauty, splendor and simplicity that is fly fishing for Trout. I have been fortunate to travel the globe in search of exotic species, but trout has always been a fish that grounds me and exemplifies why I love this sport so much.
Don't let your your best spring fly fishing opportunity slip away! The YR Ranch is an extremely unique property in the spring months. We wanted to update our readers briefly on availability since our last spotlight: in March and April Trouts Fly Fishing and Guide Service only has 21 days that are still available.
If you haven’t noticed, at Trouts Fly Fishing we spend a lot of time fishing and talking about the South Platte River. One organization that is trying to improve this fishery is the Denver chapter of Trout Unlimited. If you would like to learn more about fly fishing on the Denver South Platte and/or get more involved with helping to make improvements to the river, DTU is having a social meeting on Tuesday February 4th at 7:30 at the Skylark Tavern.
Photo Courtesy of Deneki Outdoors In preparation for our trip to the Andros South Lodge in the Bahamas in mid March, I’m in a constant state of research and preparation. I haven’t been to South Andros Island in almost 10 years. For many of our clients, this will be their first salt water fly fishing adventure – ever. As part of the planning process, I scoured the interwebs trying to find a decent video that captures some of the situations we’ll...
It was great to see the Denver Fly Fishing community representing in force this past weekend. Now, you have another chance to do it again. The Greenbacks are holding their 4th annual Surface Film event showcasing some of the nation’s best fishing photography from across the globe at the Anthology Fine Art Gallery on Thursday February 6th, 2014.
Trouts Fly Fishing would like to thank everyone who attended the Fly Fishing Film Tour this past Saturday evening. Together, in partnership with the Orvis Company, we were able to raise $1500+ for the Defend the Upper Colorado River Coalition with our two reel raffles. A BIG thanks goes out to each and everyone of you who purchased a ticket and helped the cause!
There is something to be said about starting out a new fishing season. Out with the old – in with the new. In my case, 2013 was a pretty terrible year for fly fishing for carp in the South Platte River. My biggest problem: I didn’t get out enough. A secondary issue, we had a lot of big and off color water last year that made sight fishing difficult. Thirdly - and this is just a working theory at this point - the fish in the Denver South Platte...

It is that time of the year when you should be planning your spring fly fishing trips. One property that you should consider is the YR Ranch on the Lower Blue River. This is an exclusive property that is available to Trouts Guide Service and our customers and we have fewer than 40 days available at the YR Ranch this spring.
We have a lot of customers who stop into the shop before they embark on an international saltwater fly fishing adventure. We get all kinds of gear and equipment questions as well as questions about fishing strategy and tactics. One piece of advice we always share: 'if you are new to fishing the flats or from a boat, go out and practice casting prior to your trip.'
Trouts Guide Service is off to a great season so far this year. In addition to the recent announcement of our 2014 Educational Curriculum and fly fishing schools, we continue to introduce new clients to fishing here in Colorado. Last week we were able to take a father and son team out on the South Platte River near Deckers. Anthony and Max were visiting from California and wanted to experience fly fishing in the Front Range. Neither had ever gone fly fishing before but...

When my alarm hit at 6:00 am Saturday morning I was bursting with excitement to hit the road and spend the day in the Smoky Mountains. After rolling out of bed and throwing on clothes from the night before, I was in the car and on the road by 6:05. After a short stop to grab a cup of coffee, I was cruising up I-77 as the sun rose to the East over Lake Norman.
Photo Courtesy of Patagonia At Trouts Fly Fishing we are continually evolving our equipment, gear and fly fishing apparel offering both in the shop and our online store. We just received a shipment of waist packs, sling packs and travel bags that were hand picked from the new 2014 Patagonia line. We like this gear a lot and we think you will as well. Here are a few items that caught our attention early on and a brief summary of what you can expect to find from Patagonia.
Our Hosted Trip to the Andros South Lodge is just 60 days away. We’ve been talking to our clients primarily about the pursuit of big bonefish in the Bahamas – that is what Andros South Lodge is all about. There is, however, another species that we will most likely see that we will be geared up for: ‘cuda. That’s short for big… burly… barracuda.
All photos and video courtesy of Alex Landeen Back in June of 2013 Trouts Fly Fishing announced that we were bringing a new brand and rod manufacturer under our roof here at 1303 East 6th Avenue. The news caught a lot of people’s attention. Why? Because the brand was Orvis. Since then we’ve had a great time introducing Orvis to a lot of new customers. But we still get a lot of questions. The #1 question: Why?
Here is a pretty interesting post from our friends over at Field & Stream Fly Talk. “This year I've decided that I want to do a "double-10." I want to catch a 10-pound brown trout, and at 10-pound rainbow trout, both on the fly. But here's the rub: no stockers! Only wild fish count. And only North American fish, no freak chasing in South America.” – Kirk Deeter
CASTING FOR CASH - SATURDAY JANUARY 18TH - 7:00pm International Sportsmen's Exposition This previously underground event is being opened up to the public for the first time. With the weather all over the place here in Colorado you need to pick your days with precision. The window opened up for me on the last day of the year – December 31, 2013. With weather predicted to be in the 40s, flows on the South Platte River right about 100 CFS, and only a slim chance of precipitation in the forecast, I took the opportunity. Plus, I was looking forward to catching my last fish of the year.
Tickets for the 2014 Fly Fishing Film Tour in Denver, CO are now available at Trouts Fly Fishing and our online store.
The results are in! The response to our “Your Year in Photos” photo contest sponsored by the Drake Magazine was overwhelming. This was our biggest photography contest ever. The voting, as always, was super close. We’re happy to announce that the grand prize goes to...
