QUINTANA ROO, Mexico - The year: 1982.  The month: March.  The day: Thursday, the 25th. Over a year had passed and he still had not caught a permit.  What had started out a mild curiosity had blossomed into a distant fascination.  Permit were a magnetic enigma - their behavior vexing and alluring all at the same time.  From there, things morphed into what Isaha, his closest associate and now fishing partner, called an unhealthy obsession.  “It es just a...

The Season of the EGG is Upon Us Yet Again

By: Sep 28, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
With the Fall Spawn in full swing, it's time to replenish your egg inventory before heading out for a day on the water.  In recent years the "peg egg" has become a big hit in the Rocky Mountain West, with many anglers finding this method of fishing eggs to be far more productive then their "furry" counterparts, in addition to being more friendly on the fish.  Few people know more about the benefits of fishing this method than are friends up North at Alaska...

Ringing in the Dirty Thirty, Louisiana Style

By: Sep 27, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Let's face it, turning 30 isn't exactly a milestone we are all looking forward to hitting.  But I've always been a firm believer that it's all is how you want to view it, so are you a "glass is half full" or "glass is half empty" kind of person?  Luckily I've already been down said path, and thanks to my wife my 30th birthday will be one to remember (and not remember thanks to plentiful brown water libations).  So it's fair to say that the bar was set...

What Can Brown Do For You?

By: Sep 14, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Brown trout(Salmo trutta) are an anadromous fish that naturally reproduce in rivers across the state of Colorado.  They are also one of the pinnacle species for fly fishing enthusiasts. Being an anadromous fish, browns have an instinct to ascend into rivers from the sea to spawn.  In land locked states, this drive still exists and browns typically begin a migration from lakes or lower sections of a river to upper sections when the days begin to get shorter.  Here are a few...

Keep Your Eyes On The Flows

By: Sep 13, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
As this big storm begins to dissipate we highly recommend that you do a bit more additional research before you head out the door.  There are still many areas of Colorado that are under flash flood advisory.  The Colorado Office of Emergency Management is a solid resource to pay attention to over the next few days.  It has fairly regular updates on conditions and road closures.   Also, when you decide to go fishing, use our Stream Flows page to make sure you have an...

More Good News for the Arkansas River

Fly Fishing Report: The Denver South Platte River - August 6th

By: Aug 06, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
This past weekend I had a chance for a solo trip to the Denver South Platte and I took it.  I knew that the conditions were not ideal.  For starters, the night prior to my outing we had tornado warnings for the Mile High City and a massive storm rained enough to flood the streets, dropped tennis ball size hail in some areas of the front range, and spiked the Denver South Platte past 3000 cfs. In the course of ~4 hours I had three great opportunities to hook and land...

Fly Fishing Report: The YR Ranch

By: Jul 09, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
As we recently reported in the “1303” newsletter, our property on the YR Ranch is fishing exceptionally right now.  Brown and rainbow trout are actively feeding on midges, caddis and grasshoppers.  Early in the morning, fish were recently found gently sipping smaller flies in the tailouts.  This required delicate and accurate presentations...

Fly Fishing Report: The Colorado River

By: Jul 03, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Here is a quick excerpt from this fly fishing report from the Colorado River: "We continued to move fish from the banks – some would swim along with the two intruders, giving them a thorough inspection.  It was fun to watch all of the activity from the deck but it was getting a bit frustrating. So, I did what I often do at times when gill-bearing aquatic animals with small brains are outsmarting me – I cracked a beer and opened my fly box… again..."

Gear Review: Umpqua Ledges 500 Waist Pack

By: Jul 01, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
I began using/testing the Umpqua Ledges 500 Waist Pack in March of 2013.  For me, a waist pack needs to be all-purpose.  My initial thought around the aluminum stays that really set this pack apart from other waist packs was: “Hmmmm… not sure I like those aluminum bars.” After using the Ledges 500 for three months I can report that this is probably the most comfortable pack I’ve used and also the easiest to access. I've also found some very...

Mako Madness With Rick Mikesell

By: Jun 28, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Photo by Alex Landeen The analogy between big game fly fishing and big game hunting may be a bit tired, but it holds very true. Off the coast of San Diego CA this past weekend, Alex Landeen, Conway Bowman, and I saw both extremes of this paradigm, while hunting for one of the most aggressive predators in the sea with fly rods.

Fly FIshing Denver’s South Platte River

By: Jun 19, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Here is another great article about fly fishing and the Denver South Platte River and a sound bite from Carp Slam veteran Luke Bever: "Some of these places aren't the most serene places to fish, but I can go six minutes from my house to the Platte and catch a 20-pound fish," said Luke Bever, a Denver-rooted fishing guide who primarily works the South Plate area near Deckers, 90 minutes southwest of Denver. "Down in Deckers, we're fishing for trout primarily. But in the city I've...

Fly Fishing Report: Bear Creek June 16th

By: Jun 19, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Bear Creekis a tributary of the South Platte River not far from the Mile High City. Its source is Summit Lake near the fourteen thousand foot peak of Mount Evans. Bear Creek flows to a confluence with the South Platte River just south of Downtown Denver. We fished Bear Creek right around ~30 CFS.  The water seemed quite a bit clearer up closer toward Evergreen Lake.  This might have had to do with the estimated 6 billion people (!?) recreating in the river over Father’s...

By: Jun 11, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Scott Fly Rod sent our guy Michael Gracie a prototype rod to test and provide feedback on.  He did as they asked, except when it came to keeping mum on his findings.  Roughly a month before the rod hits shop floors, he’s gone and blogged about it.  Read the brief review of the new Scott Radian 905/4 here.  We are now taking wagers on how Scott will react to the premature disclosure – sending black helicopters to surveil Michael’s...

Fly Fishing Report: Waterton Canyon June 1st

By: Jun 07, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
The first fish I hooked after a six mile bike ride up Waterton Canyon was a 13” or 14” rainbow that ate a red tungsten rojo midge.  The fish took the fly in a small section of slower moving water right in front of a two foot waterfall.  It first came toward me and then turned downstream just as quickly.  I knew that if the fish went into the faster water and over the small falls it was game over – there would be no chase due to the large and loose rocks...

TROUTS SPOTLIGHT - HOWLER BROTHERS

By: Jun 07, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
When I first came across Howler Brothers, a few lines in their catalog caught my attention. “We are Howler Brothers.  We are not really related by blood.  But we are bonded by many shared calling: surfing, fishing, paddling, and the good things that come with these pursuits.  Things like fire pits, really good tequila, limes and pre-dawn coffee.” I thought to myself: ‘I like these guys already.’
