Back in college I made the mistake of leaving a birthday card from my mom out on the kitchen counter, which inevitably found its way into the hands of my roommates. Unfortunately my mom's nickname for me was divulged, beginning what would become my new moniker for my roommates and friends alike. Luckily that name has since died been reserved for my mother once again, but the memories of said episode will always be a fond memory of my younger years.
Let's face it, we all have...

Sage Salt Fly Rod - 6 Questions with Sage Designers
Trouts Guide Service has been on the water every day this week and the reports coming in have been nothing short of outstanding. It's not always a guarantee that a guide will be grinning ear to ear by the time we reach August, however this has definitely been the case this week.
Over the course of the last decade, fly rod manufacturers have seemed to be solely dedicated to designing fast action fly rods. Sure these rods are have been light, powerful and amazingly accurate, but not every fishing situation dictates that one needs this action of fly rod. Think about it, when was the last time you had to cast 70 feet, into a 30 mph headwind, to catch a trout? So when Sage announced the debut of the ACCEL fly rod series in July, I was curiously...

Being creatures of habit, it's understandable that anglers sometimes have a hard time adjusting to change. We get used to seeing and fishing rivers during certain conditions, and when these conditions change it can be difficult to adjust how you're fishing to remain productive. This scenario has proven particularly true this year with the abundance of water flowing through our States rivers and steams, all thanks to a record snowpack from the winter season. This in...

The South Platte River below the Cheesman Reservoir is still a little high but extremely productive at the end of June. Cody and I took a trip up to Cheesman Canyon yesterday and fished for most of the afternoon. When we fished the river the water was at 520 cfs but the clarity was excellent and we could see fish moving around as we hiked. After hiking for about an hour, we scoped out a few holes and decided to pull our Sage fly rods out to try our luck.
We both set up our...

Trouts Fly Fishing and Guide Service just wrapped up another successful On-Stream Beginner Fly Fishing School this past weekend. River flows on the North Fork of the South Platte River are on the decline making this a great destination for new as well as experienced anglers. With the weather temperature holding in the mid seventies, the river flow right at 345 CFS and sunny skies, we were able to enjoy the first day of summer here in Colorado at the Rowdy Trout Ranch.
A big THANK YOU to the Denver Post for helping produce this great instructional video in conjunction with Trouts Guide Service. With fishing starting to light up across the state, now is a great time to get into the sport of fly fishing. Be sure to check out our comprehensive educational offering scheduled through the rest of the summer, or just come by the shop and allow our experienced staff to help get you into this great sport.
Substantial runoff years like we're currently experiencing are really a blessing in disguise. On one hand it's nothing but a burden on fisherman, as the high and off-color rivers impede our desire need to fish. Yet at the same time the abundance of water will help guarantee an explosive late-summer fishing season, as well as reservoirs and rivers that will be flush full of cool mountain water. So the big question on the first day of summer is when will the 2014 runoff...
The Blue at Silverthorne is still a little higher than the 51 year median average and currently sits at 701 cfs. When I fished the Blue at Silverthorne on Wednesday the levels were a little higher at 812 cfs but fished exceptionally well all things considered. I moved up and downstream from Silverthorne and had the best luck in the slower moving pools after the longer whitewater runs. I only fished for a couple of hours but the time was very productive as I adjusted weight and strike indicator...
Every once in a while you have a day of fishing that inspires you. These are the days when everything comes together the way you expect it to, yet still offers welcome surprises in the way of an empty river, hungry fish, and wonderful company. For me, this is what makes fly fishing such a wonderful pursuit, and will forever have me coming back for more.
It all started out harmless enough; a day of fishing with my long-time friend and mentor John Cochran, current GM at Vail Valley...
