10 Questions To Ask Before You Take A Guided Fly Fishing Trip

Ivan Orsic / May 3, 2013

Here are ten questions you should ask when trying to find the best fly fishing guide service to ensure that you have a world class experience in Colorado.

1) Is the guide service licensed, bonded and insured? If an outfitter is not licensed, bonded and insured in Colorado they are guiding illegally.

2) Is a fishing license required? Yes. If you live in Colorado, are visiting from out of the state or out of the country, you must purchase a fishing license and in some cases, a habitat stamp. Here is a cursory summary:

· ADULTS — People 16 and older are required to buy and carry with them a fishing license

· YOUTH — Those under 16 can fish without a license

· SENIORS — Colorado residents 64 and older can obtain an annual fishing license from a Wildlife Service Center or license agent for $1

· You can purchase your license at Trouts Fly Fishing when you arrive in Denver or you can purchase one in advance online.

3) What is the weather like on a fly fishing trip in Colorado?

Weather conditions are constantly changing in Colorado and it is important to always be prepared. A high quality pair of waders and wading boots is a really good idea if you are going to be fishing in rivers or wading in lakes. Trouts Guide Service can supply boots, waders, rods, reels, and terminal tackle if needed – or, you can bring your own equipment. A good strategy to stay warm – and cool – is to use layers when fishing in the spring, fall or winter months. Polypropylene tops and bottoms are a great base layer. Using a “layered” strategy is also a good idea as you can add or remove clothing as the weather changes. You should always be prepared with a dependable rain shell or GORETEX shell. Don’t forget to bring a pair polarized sunglasses. Many times, you will have the opportunity to see fish as they swim and feed in the water and polarized sunglasses makes seeing fish through the glare much more effective. Sunscreen and a baseball hat is a great way to help keep the sun out of your face and eyes.

4) What about bad weather? At Trouts Guide Service, we fish in the rain, snow, sleet and sunshine. Weather is a variable in Colorado and we adjust our strategies accordingly.

5) What should I bring on a day trip? Here is a list of items to consider brining along on your trip:

· Long underwear (especially during fall, winter, and spring months)

· Wool or fleece socks

· Sunblock

· Polarized sun glasses

· Gloves

· Baseball Hat

· Winter Hat

· Quick dry pants

6) Where do trips typically originate and terminate? Trouts Guide Service typically begins and ends guided trips at the shop conveniently located at 1303 East 6th Avenue, Denver Co 80218. Alternative meeting areas can be arranged on an individual case basis. Those arrangements should be made with your guide directly or discussed when you book your trip over the phone or in the shop.

7) Can I get picked up at my hotel in Denver or the Denver International Airport? Trouts Guide Service is flexible and can arrange for our clients to be picked up and dropped off at their hotels of choice. Trouts can also arrange to pick you up at the airport if you would like to go fishing directly upon your arrival. Rates for this transportation service will be quoted on an individual case basis – please ask whoever you are working with at Trouts about this option to receive a customized transportation quote.

8) What is an appropriate tip for a day of guided fly fishing? A gratuity for a guided trip is optional based on the service you receive and your level of satisfaction with the trip. That said, and industry standard is a 20% tip/gratuity.

9) What additional costs should I expect? Trouts Guide Service is an all inclusive fly fishing service provider. The only costs that are NOT included are a) cost of your Colorado Fishing License b) the gratuity that you choose to pay your guide. All other items like flies, tippet, leaders, rods, reels, lunch etc. are included in the trip cost. For certain trips to private water settings, rod fees do apply and those will be explained and quoted at the time of booking your trip.

10) What is the best way to book a trip? The best way to book a trip is to call the shop direct at 877.464.0034 or stop in.
