Video Spotlight: Cuda Quickie

By: Apr 18, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
We spent quite a bit of time getting prepared for barracuda before we left for our trip to South Andros Island (you can check out our how-to  'cuda rig videos on our blog as well).  Once we were there, we spent more time stalking these aggressive fish on the flats - both on foot and from the boat.  It took a little while to crack the code, but we were finally able to connect.

Gooned At The Lagoon: Part II

By: Apr 15, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Mosquito Lagoon just a the sun begins to rise When we left the dock at 5:30am it was dark out – pitch black.  My guide, Captain John Turcot had approached from the south of Mosquito Lagoon and I could hear the whine of his Hell’s Bay skiff for a good two minutes before he reached me.  As I watched him approach under the stars I could see that he held a hand torch to navigate the small creeks and cuts that riddle this inland waterway.  We were getting a...

Kick’in it on the Big Horn - a Photo Essay

By: Apr 12, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Fishing trips are a special thing.  The utter simplicity of walking away from your day to day life to focus on nothing more than fooling a fish to eat your fly.  A time when the biggest decision you have to make is between 4X and 5X leaders, and what kind of meat you're going to throw on the girll that night.  Is it a Makers night, or maybe should we throw ourselves a curve ball and bust out that bottle of Knob Creek?  Awe yes, fishing trips are a special thing. My...

Saltwater Gear Review: RIO Bonefish Fly Line

By: Apr 11, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
What We Say I’m a big believer that having the right saltwater fly line matters. I’ve had lines that were too subtle and light which made casting in the wind difficult.  I’ve also had lines that were great to cast in the wind but when they hit the water it was like a bomb exploding – and bonefish don’t like bombs exploding close by.

Saltwater Gear Review: Sage 4280 Fly Reel

By: Apr 10, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
The last time I brought a brand new reel down to a saltwater environment without having fished it before, things did not end well.  After the first fish I hooked took it on a blistering 150 yard run the reel failed and I struggled trying to hand line the fish in.  I was not a happy camper.

Saltwater Gear Review: Sage ONE 890-4

By: Apr 09, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
What We Say My favorite trout rod here in Colorado is the Sage ONE 490-4.  It is light – it is accurate – and I can use it in a variety conditions.  I decided to see if the Sage ONE 890-4 would have the same attributes and chose it as my go-to saltwater fly rod on a recent trip to the Bahamas.  I was happy with my decision.

Andros South Lodge Fly Fishing Report

By: Mar 25, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
My eyes had to adjust to what I was looking at.  I hadn’t seen anything like it in almost 10 years.  The large mass of grey/brown color could easily be mistaken for a patch of Caribbean turtle grass or coral… but it wasn’t turtle grass or coral.  It was a massive school of Bahamian bonefish.  “You see how those fish are starting to move to the left,” said Sparkles, our guide from the Andros South Lodge.  “Show me the cast...

By: Mar 17, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd

By: Feb 27, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Photo Courtesy of Chris S. There is nothing we like better then getting a fly fishing report from a customer after we have set them up with gear for an international fly fishing adventure.  We just received this report from Chris S. who we first met back in January.  “I just returned today from Christmas Island ... it was incredible,” said Chris.  “Giant trevally, big bones, all kinds of other species ... including a Barracuda!”

Don’t Let This Happen To You

By: Feb 26, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
When you travel internationally to go fly fishing, things don’t always go as planned.  Actually, I take that back.  Most of the time something, somewhere, somehow… things manage to go awry.  It actually makes sense.  You are going somewhere new, fishing for a new species, making tight connections, using new gear and exploring new water. Sometimes… sXit just happens.

By: Feb 21, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd

Barracuda Rig Step One: The Perfection Loop

By: Feb 12, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
When welded loops became common place on the terminal section of most premium fly lines, the perfection loop went from being a rather obscure knot, to one that is a must have for fly anglers of all skill levels.  For our upcoming trip to the Bahamas, we’ll be tying some of our own leaders specifically for barracuda.  Although some anglers dislike a loop-to-loop connection between their fly line and leader, we’ve found over the years, the benefits of a loop-to-loop...

Fly Fishing Report: Winter South Platte Carp

By: Jan 24, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
There is something to be said about starting out a new fishing season.  Out with the old – in with the new.  In my case, 2013 was a pretty terrible year for fly fishing for carp in the South Platte River.  My biggest problem: I didn’t get out enough.  A secondary issue, we had a lot of big and off color water last year that made sight fishing difficult.  Thirdly - and this is just a working theory at this point - the fish in the Denver South Platte...

Fly Casting Tune Up

By: Jan 20, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
We have a lot of customers who stop into the shop before they embark on an international saltwater fly fishing adventure.  We get all kinds of gear and equipment questions as well as questions about fishing strategy and tactics.  One piece of advice we always share: 'if you are new to fishing the flats or from a boat, go out and practice casting prior to your trip.'

Trip Report: New River - Galax, VA

By: Jan 15, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
When my alarm hit at 6:00 am Saturday morning I was bursting with excitement to hit the road and spend the day in the Smoky Mountains. After rolling out of bed and throwing on clothes from the night before, I was in the car and on the road by 6:05. After a short stop to grab a cup of coffee, I was cruising up I-77 as the sun rose to the East over Lake Norman.

Fly Presentation: Barracuda

By: Jan 13, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Our Hosted Trip to the Andros South Lodge is just 60 days away.  We’ve been talking to our clients primarily about the pursuit of big bonefish in the Bahamas – that is what Andros South Lodge is all about.  There is, however, another species that we will most likely see that we will be geared up for: ‘cuda.  That’s short for big… burly… barracuda.

Why Orvis? And Helios 2 Gear Review

By: Jan 10, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
All photos and video courtesy of Alex Landeen Back in June of 2013 Trouts Fly Fishing announced that we were bringing a new brand and rod manufacturer under our roof here at 1303 East 6th Avenue.  The news caught a lot of people’s attention.  Why?  Because the brand was Orvis. Since then we’ve had a great time introducing Orvis to a lot of new customers. But we still get a lot of questions.  The #1 question: Why?

What’s Your 2014 Resolution Fish?

By: Jan 09, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Here is a pretty interesting post from our friends over at Field & Stream Fly Talk.  “This year I've decided that I want to do a "double-10." I want to catch a 10-pound brown trout, and at 10-pound rainbow trout, both on the fly. But here's the rub: no stockers! Only wild fish count. And only North American fish, no freak chasing in South America.” – Kirk Deeter

Fly Fishing Report: Last Fish of the Season

By: Jan 07, 2014 | Author: Tucker Ladd
With the weather all over the place here in Colorado you need to pick your days with precision.  The window opened up for me on the last day of the year – December 31, 2013.  With weather predicted to be in the 40s, flows on the South Platte River right about 100 CFS, and only a slim chance of precipitation in the forecast, I took the opportunity.  Plus, I was looking forward to catching my last fish of the year.

"For this particular adventure I worked with the guys at Damonte Outfitters, a fly shop and guide service located in San Martin De Los Andes in Argentina," said Tucker Ladd.  "They...

Winter Fly Fishing Report: The South Platte River

By: Dec 23, 2013 | Author: Tucker Ladd
Trouts Guide Service operates twelve months out of the year and we’re available just about every day of each season.  Fly fishing in December can be cold and sometimes tricky but one big upside to fly fishing in the winter additional solitude you get on the water.  On our last client trip we visited the main stem of the South Platte River near Deckers. Flows on this section of the river have been hovering right around 100 CFS and the water is very clear. On the day we...
