Spring Fly Fishing: The Warm Water Report

May 2, 2014
Author: Rick Mikesell

With temperatures in the 70's & 80's over the past few weeks, Colorado’s Warm Water fisheries are coming alive. As water temps warm, Bass, Pike & Carp, are moving into the shallows to feed on the newfound abundance of spring, creating unique sight fishing opportunities for the fly fisher. As spring further asserts herself, these fisheries will only continue to improve, and conveniently provided some excellent alternatives to the increasingly turbid, runoff trout waters. This Late April we have had some excellent fishing across the front range, from the south eastern extreme of the state, to the very immediate metro area, a we only expect it to get better......

Carp Action in the Denver Metro Ponds is getting better daily

Not the greatest scenery, but they certainly put a bend in the rod

Finned Up & The Urban Skyline

Carp were gorging on Chironomids at John Martin Reservoir in South Eastern Colorado

This Freshwater Drum (Pretty Rare in Colorado) ate a  Backstabber Leech, and gave the Helios 2 a workout

Bass are moving into the shallows, and starting to get aggressive. The Winston BIII-SX is the perfect tool for putting big flies in front of these fish with pinpoint accuracy.

Pike are also in skinny on the Front Rage, and can provide some of the most exciting eats in freshwater.

The Fishpond Westwater Sling is great for keeping you gear dry when you encounter unpredictable spring weather.
