Casting For Recovery a Success

Author: Will Rice

The Colorado program of Casting for Recovery was just held on Sunday, May 20th. This year's retreat was held at the North Fork Ranch in Shawnee and hosted by ranch owners and long-time Casting for Recovery supporters Dean and Karen May. The 520-acre ranch rests along a pristine stretch of the North Fork of the South Platte River, teeming with Rainbow, Brown, and Cutthroat Trout.

The mission of Casting for Recovery is to provide fly-fishing retreats specifically tailored for women who have or have had breast cancer. The program seeks to enhance the lives of breast cancer survivors by providing retreats designed to promote and support mental and physical healing.

Trout's Fly Fishing employee Cody Hoeckelberg provided his guide services and other support at the event and provided the following report and images.

“We had an awesome day at the North Fork Ranch with the great ladies from Casting For Recovery,” said Cody. “We could not have asked for better weather and the fishing was pretty good too!”

To date, more than 300 women have attended one of the 23 Colorado retreats. Located an hour southwest of Denver, North Fork Ranch sits at an elevation of 8100 ft. and adjoins the Pike National Forest, Lost Creek Wilderness, and Mt. Evans Wilderness.

What an awesome organization! I remember when they were first getting started, back in about 1999 I think it was. Glad to see Casting For Recovery has grown so much and helped so many.

We couldn’t agree more Ian.  Let’s not forget how important the volunteers are that participate in days like this.  If anybody is ever interested in helping with the next Casting for Recovery event, please contact Cody Hoeckelberg at
