Fly Fishing Report: The Denver South Platte River - August 6th

August 6, 2013
Author: Will Rice

This past weekend I had a chance for a solo trip to the Denver South Platte and I took it.  I knew that the conditions were not ideal.  For starters, the night prior to my outing we had tornado warnings for the Mile High City and a massive storm rained enough to flood the streets, dropped tennis ball size hail in some areas of the front range, and spiked the Denver South Platte past 3000 cfs. In the course of ~4 hours I had three great opportunities to hook and land fish… and I blew all three.

Here’s what went wrong.

Fly Fishing Report: The South Platte River July 30th

July 30, 2013
Author: Will Rice

The summer monsoon season has given much of Colorado a break with cooler weather and sporadic rain events across the state.  This is good news as it has dropped the water temperatures in many of the more popular rivers.

Dam fed tailwaters will continue to be great fly fishing options and the South Platte River near Deckers proves to be no exception. We’ve had a number of guided fly fishing trips on the South Platte River over the past week and here are a few of the highlights.

TROUTS SPOTLIGHT - THE WCR RANCH

July 16, 2013
Author: Will Rice

The WCR Ranch is located on a small tributary of the upper Colorado River, approximately 35 miles in length. The creek rises in northwestern Grand County, in the Arapaho National Forest at the top of the continental divide and flows southeast toward the Colorado River. The WCR Ranch is home to Lodgepole and Ponderosa Pines, Douglas-Firs, and Aspen stands.  The creek itself meanders through a wide-open meadow closely cropped with willows, cut banks, and a variety of alpine wildflowers.  Surrounding the creek are majestic peaks that reach elevations of 12,000ft and higher.  The WCR Ranch is truly a wild place.
