Scott Willoughby from the Denver Post has written about another great river conservation/rehabilitation success story here in Colorado.  Here’s a sound bite:

“Perhaps the most remarkable thing about stream restoration is its immediacy. Take the pollution out of the river and fish can survive. Add some structure, dig out a few pools, shore up eroding banks, and the fish move into the improved habitat almost instantaneously. It happened last spring on the South Platte at Carson Nature Center. And it happened on the Arkansas last week.”

Fly Fishing Report: The Denver South Platte River - August 6th

This past weekend I had a chance for a solo trip to the Denver South Platte and I took it.  I knew that the conditions were not ideal.  For starters, the night prior to my outing we had tornado warnings for the Mile High City and a massive storm rained enough to flood the streets, dropped tennis ball size hail in some areas of the front range, and spiked the Denver South Platte past 3000 cfs. In the course of ~4 hours I had three great opportunities to hook and land fish… and I blew all three.

Here’s what went wrong.

Fly Fishing Report: The South Platte River July 30th

The summer monsoon season has given much of Colorado a break with cooler weather and sporadic rain events across the state.  This is good news as it has dropped the water temperatures in many of the more popular rivers.

Dam fed tailwaters will continue to be great fly fishing options and the South Platte River near Deckers proves to be no exception. We’ve had a number of guided fly fishing trips on the South Platte River over the past week and here are a few of the highlights.

Trouts Fly Fishing would like to thank all of our customers who participated in our On-Stream Beginner Fly Fishing School this past weekend.  Our students learned the basics of fly fishing including casting, reading water, entomology, and fly selection.  They then had a chance to put it all together and get out on the water and catch some great looking fish.
