2013 Gear In Review Part I

December 20, 2013
Author: Will Rice

We had a lot of fun in 2013 talking to our customers about fly fishing gear and equipment.  We tested rods from the banks of British Columbia to small saltwater atolls of Honduras.  We put boots and waders through the ringer from Colorado to Montana.  Here is Part I of a two part series – enjoy the Trouts Fly Fishing Gear in Review!

Gear Review: Sage Method 6126

November 19, 2013
Author: Trouts Staff

Over the last several years I have cast a wide variety of spey rods in various sizes, shapes and makes and I had a pretty good idea what I liked or disliked in a 2 handed rod.  Spey rods are built for power and if using good--or in my case adequate-- casting techniques, they are the perfect tool for the job when it comes to swinging flies for anadromous fish.  At 12-17’ long, they’re going to move some line, so power has always been a term to describe them in almost any gear review or stream side chat.  But one term I had never used before and almost never heard when describing two handed rods, regardless of make or model prior to this year was comfort.  That is, until I fished the new Sage Method.  Ultimately the Sage Method, Skagit Max and ConnectCore Shooting Line worked extremely well together and I was very impressed with how well this lighter, shorter six-weight handled larger rivers and some very large steelhead.

The Things They Carried: Denver South Platte Carp Slam

September 4, 2013
Author: Will Rice

With the Carp Slam just eight days away I decided to get out and after it one last time before the fly fishing moratorium kicked in.  In addition, I decided to share what I’ll be rolling with on Saturday morning for Carp Slam 7 on the South Platte River.  I’m of the opinion that “less is more” on the South Platte so I’ll be traveling light.  These are the things I’ll be carrying – so to speak.  I’ll start from the ground up.
