Gear Review: Cliff Outdoors Days Worth Fly Box

July 6, 2011
Author: Trouts Staff

I personally use my Day's Worth as a midge box, opting to keep all my tiny nymphs on the magnetic pad and my small midge dries on the foam strips.

Gear Review: Palsa Pinch On Floats Strike Indicator

July 6, 2011

I was first introduced to the Palsa Pinch On Floats strike indicators while fishing the Yampa River tailwaters below Stagecoach State Park.  This was probably 10 or more years ago, a time when the yarn poly-vee was as good as it got...at least, so I thought!  While sight fishing a decent run, holding a few wily rainbows, I noticed that whenever my massive "ball of yarn" came over them that they would move to the side.  Once my rig had drifted through, yep you guessed it, they would move right back.  Absurd I thought, fish can't be that smart.  That was one of my first introductions to highly educated trout that were sensitive to both indicators and split shot.  Upon my realization, I voiced my frustration to my buddy just upstream.  He had the solution, Palsa Pinch On Strike Indicators...his were white.  Since that day, even with the advent of the varying sizes/colors of the Thingamambobber, I've carried Palsa Pinch On Indicators in my bag.

Gear Review: Nomad Guide Landing Net

June 28, 2011

I will say I am impressed with Nomad's Long handle "Guide" net after using it on several outings and landing multiple species of fish. This net is made of a carbon-fiber graphite composite which makes the net very lightweight, yet durable and will tuck down the side of your pack and be relatively out-of the way of your legs.   (For my height I need four inches lopped off the bottom of the handle.) A huge upside to this net is the fact that it floats on the surface of the water and does not gradually start to sink over time.

Gear Review: Fishpond Prairie Grass Kit Bag

June 15, 2011
Author: Trouts Staff

I haven’t been much for fancy luggage since an upscale suit bag I was toting disappeared from a baggage claim area in 1995. I’ve used plain brown wrapper ever since.

Then last month I decided to attempt a week-long bonefishing trip with nothing more than a carry-on bag. I went rummaging through the ziploc storage, but they were all full of year-old peanut butter and jelly sandwiches I made last time I thought a zombie invasion was imminent. And I’d already calculated that I needed somewhere north of 2,000 cubic inches anyway.
