Andrew P, a shop client, shows off his first ever fly caught carp from the Denver South Platte River in May

People ask me all the time: “What is a good time to fish the South Platte River in Denver for carp?”  My first answer: “It depends a lot on the flows.”

At Trouts Fly Fishing, we’re always working with customers to help them make the best decisions when it comes to choosing the right fly line.  We always want to find out what equipment you are pairing a fly line with, what your casting experience has been to date, and what you are trying to accomplish on the water.

We wanted to share this quick video with from Rio Products because it breaks down many of the different fishing situations anglers will come across and demonstrates how different fly lines can help you make a better cast and presentation.

South Platte River Fly Fishing Report: May

The fishing on the main stem of the South Platte River continues to be excellent with flows right in line with historic averages.  On one of our recent guide trips we started fairly early and we were on the water before 8:00am.  The water was clear and the Stream Flow was at 288 CFS.  We had clear skies and the river was pleasantly un-crowded. We began fishing just downstream of Deckers and found a few feeding rainbows right out of the gate.

Author: Kevin Cooke

A few months back, I recall turning to a coworker after picking up the fishpond Westwater Sling pack and saying, “This is the sling pack that I want!” As many of you know, I recently started fishing more than I ever have before and with all of the opportunities around the Denver area can you blame me? As my fishing toolbox began to grow, I needed to figure out a way to simplify and organize all of my tricks of the trade for a full day out on the water. Scouting taught me to “Be Prepared” and the fishpond Westwater Sling Pack gives you ample room to do just that while out on the water.
