The Things They Carried: Whipray Caye Belize

May 1, 2014
Author: Will Rice

When Tucker gave us our 2014 Destination Travel marching orders I immediately thought about one thing: permit.  As anyone who has been in the shop or has read our blog over the last year knows, I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to land a permit for quite some time.  Permit fishing is a high stakes game – big risk with a big reward and a lot of variables to think about. With my mind made up about the target species, the next question became where and when and with who.  The first phone call I made was to Jim Klug at Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures.

2014 Destination Travel Plans

Destination travel is a very big interest for a lot of our customers here at Trouts Fly Fishing.  We have some extremely seasoned anglers who spend a significant of time each year researching new destinations and returning to amazing fisheries across the globe.  We also have a number of clients who are looking to branch out for the first time.  From steelhead in the Pacific Northwest, redfish in Louisiana to chasing bonefish, permit and tarpon in the Caribbean, there is no doubt that traveling and fly fishing are a great combination.  To that end, I think it is important that my staff is equally well traveled.  Without further ado, here is what you can expect from the Trouts crew this year.

Gooned At The Lagoon: Part II

Mosquito Lagoon just a the sun begins to rise

When we left the dock at 5:30am it was dark out – pitch black.  My guide, Captain John Turcot had approached from the south of Mosquito Lagoon and I could hear the whine of his Hell’s Bay skiff for a good two minutes before he reached me.  As I watched him approach under the stars I could see that he held a hand torch to navigate the small creeks and cuts that riddle this inland waterway.  We were getting a “O’Dark Thirty” start to chase redfish.
