Fly Fishing Report: The South Platte River in November

November 8, 2013
Author: Will Rice

Flows on the South Platte River near Deckers have been on the rise.  We were able to fish the river right around 120 CFS and the water clarity was excellent.  Flows have since bumped up to 180 CFS.  We could spot fish in a few of the runs and fish were actively feeding.

We chose to focus on finding small pockets of slower moving and stayed away from some of the bigger more popular runs.  Make no mistake, even in November, Deckers can be a pretty popular place on a weekend.

Fish were very interested in egg patterns (6mm) as well as baetis nymphs.  The red Juju Baetis (22) continues to be a hit on the South Platte River.  We did see midges coming off sporadically throughout the day and we saw a few baetis coming off as well.

Throughout the day, we found browns and rainbows equally eager to take a fly.

Our prediction at this point is that this section of the South Platte River will continue to fish well all through November and well into the winter months.  If you have any questions about fishing this section of river or would like to take a full day or half day guided trip give us a call at the shop – 303.733.1434.
