As we recently reported in the “1303” newsletter, our property on the YR Ranch is fishing exceptionally right now. Brown and rainbow trout are actively feeding on midges, caddis and grasshoppers. Early in the morning, fish were recently found gently sipping smaller flies in the tailouts. This required delicate and accurate presentations. Later in the day the fish seemed to move out into faster water and eagerly charged larger patterns including Parachute Adams, and larger hopper/dropper rigs with foam hoppers and Elk Hair Caddis patterns in the size 16-18 range. The water clarity is currently excellent with upwards of 3’+ in visibility making sight fishing a strong possibility even when the fish aren’t actively feeding on the surface.
Fly patterns that were effective included: Charlie Boy Hopper (12) Extended Body BWO/PMD (18-20), Prince Nymph (16), Caddis Larva (16) Parachute Adams (16-18), Elk Hair Caddis (16-18), Geezer Pleaser (10), Electric Caddis (14-16), Red San Juan Worm, BH FB Pheasant Tail
