Trouts Guide Service is off to a great season so far this year. In addition to the recent announcement of our 2014 Educational Curriculum and fly fishing schools, we continue to introduce new clients to fishing here in Colorado. Last week we were able to take a father and son team out on the South Platte River near Deckers. Anthony and Max were visiting from California and wanted to experience fly fishing in the Front Range. Neither had ever gone fly fishing before but were excited to get out and try fly fishing in Colorado in January.
Water temperatures read 41F on our thermometer and the stream flow remained right at 150 CFS. The weather was solid for early January – the sun was out and the temperature pushed into the mid-40’s. The water clarity was relatively clear with some free-floating debris present.
After a brief rigging, rod handling and casting tutorial, the anglers hit the South Platte River and worked on getting good clean dead drifts in the slower, deeper water utilizing weighted nymph rigs. Size 20 Juju Baetis and egg attractors were a productive fly pattern combination.
Within minutes of stepping on the river, Max hooked and landed his first fish on a fly rod – an awesome milestone for every angler. The day continued to fish well with most fish being caught in the tailouts of runs, or behind structure. The South Platte was fishing very well and both father and son ended up hooking and landing very nice fish.
