In typical fashion, Sage has raised the bar in fly rod and fly reel technology and design. In conjunction with the start of the European Fishing Tackle Trade Exhibition (EFTTEX) today, Sage has released their new product offerings for the 2014 season to the public. Please don't ask me why the European Market gets first crack at this new product; it's a question I have been asking internally at Sage for years. Nonetheless, here's a sneak peak of new product hitting our store in August of this year.
Sage SALT Fly Rod Series
This new saltwater specific fly rod will replace the ever popular Xi3 family, a hugely popular big game cannon that changed what anglers expected of a saltwater stick. The key change to this new fly rod series is the addition of Konnetic Technology to the rod blank design. Here's a brief explanation from Sage on the new SALT fly rod:
"Using Konnetic Technology®, Sage created the SALT to load quickly as well as maintain high line speeds and accuracy to land the fly exactly where wary saltwater species demand. The SALT’s robust salt-action taper provides the power needed to cast today’s heavier fly lines and deliver all sizes of flies at any range with precision."
Adds Jerry Siem, cheif rod designer at Sage, "The ability to adapt to quickly changing conditions is imperative when saltwater fishing, and Konnetic Technology allows deft sensitivity and the ability to track extremely straight. The new SALT shines in all fishing scenarios.”
This new rod will certainly be a much-needed addition to the Konnetic Technology family of fly rods currently being offered by Sage, and I'm sure it will turn out to be an industry leading saltwater fly rod.
Sage ACCEL Fly Rod Series
The ACCEL falls under a rod category I like to call "Lifestyle Fly Rods"; you get a high quality, high performance fly rod from a industry leading manufacturer, but all without the top of the line price. Don't get me wrong, at $595 this rod isn't the cheapest option on the market today, but for the quality and performance you get, you'll love this rod for as long as you own it. I feel confident saying this as the new ACCEL rod is built off of Sage's proven Generation 5 technology, which was the foundation of rods like the Z-Axis, is a sound manufacturing process that produces high performing fly rods. Here's what Sage has to say about this new rod offering:
“Adding a graphite hoop core and axial fiber material in the new Generation 5 technology allowed for a lighter, ultra-responsive, and livelier blank with a narrower shaft,” says Sage chief rod designer Jerry Siem. “The ACCEL permits anglers to feel the rod load for optimum casting control.”
We're excited to see Sage expanding their rod offerings into lower price points, all while keeping true to their reputation of making the best fly rods on the market. The ACCEL will be available in single hand, switch and spey models.
Sage DOMAIN Fly Reel Series
Sage puts it best when they say the new DOMAIN reel "marries tradition with advanced design". With a full cage frame and Sage's proprietary Sealed Carbon System (SCS) drag, the DOMAIN will change the way people look and think about fly reels. This reel was made with the switch and spey fishermen in mind, but we're sure the single-handed aficionados will easily gravitate to this reels for is high performance and durability.
“Every Sage reel is purpose-built to be the right tool to get the job done, and the DOMAIN is no exception,” notes Kurt VanWyck, Sage director of research and design. “This reel is designed with a nod to tradition but with all the modern engineering and advances anglers have come to expect from Sage reels.”
Available in 3 sizes, the DOMAIN reels will cover rod weights from 5wt - 10wt, but we won't be surprised to see some smaller sizes down the road as this reel proves it's worth in the single hand market.
