BLM Clears Christo's Over The River Installation
The Denver Post, November 7, 2011
Federal officials today said the Bureau of Land Management's Royal Gorge Field Office has released the record of decision approving artist Christo's plan to suspend 5.9 miles of fabric over parts of a 42-mile stretch of the Arkansas River between Salida and Cañon City.
The project now must get approval from Fremont and Chaffe county officials, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the before construction can begin next year.
The Over The River installation is planned to be on display for two weeks in August of 2014. Like other works designed by Christo and his late wife Jeanne-Claude, the cost of the estimated $50 million project will be covered by fundraising and the sale of art related to the installation.
In October, the state Land Board agreed to lease about 138 acres of land for the project, including a 7.7-acre parcel to anchor some of the shimmery fabric and a 130-acre parcel for a protected corridor designed to appeal to bighorn sheep that live in the river canyon.
