3 Places To Fish This Weekend - 1/20/22

Brandon Rodriguez / Jan 20, 2022

Today we are taking out the guesswork when it comes to where to go fishing. We won't just be going over where to fish but, more importantly, how to fish and what to throw. If you want to take even more guesswork off your plate this weekend, shop our Staff Picks fly selections are tailored to any river you will find here in Colorado! No matter if you find yourself fishing along the Front Range this weekend or up in Summit County, both our retail locations will help you dial in whatever river you fish. We also offer rental options for those new to the sport looking to explore the world of fly fishing! So, without further ado, let's dive into the top three places to fish this weekend.

The Blue River - at Silverthorne

Latest update: 1/20/2022 -- River Rating 4/5

Flows are around 80 CFS this week on the Blue this week. Silverthorne has been a great option lately- there is always open water and fish to be had despite surrounding frigid temperatures. You are also in close proximity to some good eats, so if you can't handle the cold head in for a warm lunch. There isn't much fishable water north of town anymore because the river is now frozen, but the stretch through the outlet mall and just below the dam remains wide open. Sight fishing small nymph rigs have been a go-to for us. We have been fishing 7.5-foot fluorocarbon leaders down to 5X with a single-size BB shot. Any of the small nymphs in sizes #16-22 mentioned below are a good starting point!

The Colorado River - Kremmling to Catamount

Latest update: 1/19/22 -- RIVER RATING 3/5

Colorado at Kremmling has decreased to 506 cfs.

It's possible that ice could be present through this section. Look for open channels between ice shelves. Once that morning sun hits, be ready for fishing to pick up! The main success will come from nymphing this section. Although, trying smaller BWO dry flies late in the day isn't a bad idea. Fish mid-morning and later into the evening for the most success.

Fly Patterns include: Leeches #12-16, Caddis imitations #14-18, Smaller stoneflies #10-14, midges/Baetis #18-22. You can also fish streamers sticking to darker profiles in low light conditions and brighter flashy patterns on sunny days.

The South Platte River - Deckers

Latest Update 1/20/2022-- RIVER RATING 4/5

Flows are around 120 CFS this week. Early mornings are frigid, so take your time getting out to the water. 9 foot 5 or 6X leaders with small split shot are still working fine for us. Tandem indicator rigs with #20-24 midges & baetis nymphs have been the go-to. A larger scud or egg pattern #(14-16) has also been productive as a lead fly through the faster/deeper water. Check out the suggested patterns below!
