After a brief break from the Bi-Weekly Video Fishing Report & Forecast, Trouts own Ivan Orsic is back on the back of his truck talking about the current river and fishing conditions throughout Colorado. After a couple of false starts, runoff is rolling. Temperatures in the high country are forecasted to be downright summery and Colorado's freestones are on the rise. While the freestones are going to be rising, the tailwaters are staying pretty steady. Our reservoirs were taxed during last year's low water and refilling them is important, so our tailwaters will remain pretty steady and relatively low until the reservoirs fill up. That means caddis, blue-wings, and midges are great options up and down the South Platte. Look for rising fish to caddis on sunny days and blue-wings on cloudy days.
There's no doubt that there is quite a bit of snow still left in the high country and we will see elevated flows through the month of June. But, there is plenty of great fishing to be had. Whether you stay closer to town and go after the various warmwater species that live along the Front Range or you head up to the many mountain reservoirs that hold sizable trout, June is a great month to go against the grain and try something a little different.
