Trouts Fly Fishing Forecast | May 15th Edition

Ivan Orsic / May 15, 2020

The big flows of runoff are upon us, especially on our favorite freestones. However, that certainly doesn't mean that fish can't be caught on freestones, tailwaters, and stillwaters. Being that it's May, flow bumps are to be expected, especially when the high country experiences spurts of warmer ambient air temperatures.

Over the next two weeks, we'll continue to see variable flows. While this variability can bring some sediment into the river, you can still put plenty of fish in the net when the water is dirty. Find soft water along the banks and use big, buggy subsurface flies. When you find one fish, chances are you'll find a bunch.

On tailwaters, caddis will continue to play a larger role, as will leeches, worms, eggs, scuds, and blue-winged olives. It's time to welcome all sorts of flies to your rig! Be prepared with the full gamut of subsurface offerings. Don't forget about dry flies on your favorite tailwaters.
