Trouts Fly Fishing Forecast | May 1st Edition

Ivan Orsic / May 1, 2020

We've entered late spring here in the Rockies. With a spurt of recent warm weather, we're seeing more variable flows, especially on the freestones. Now, more than ever, is the time to pay attention to flows (especially whether they rise or fall) and weather. For freestones more than tailwaters, changes in both will have a very direct impact on fishing. The South Platte through Cheesman & Deckers bumped above 300 cfs, which means it's time to mix in scuds, leeches, worms, eggs, and stoneflies to your rig. When flows bump, it's time to break out the JUNK.

We're also seeing increased caddis activity on freestones and tailwaters, alike. Gone are the winter days of having midges and attractors in your box. It's time to welcome all sorts of flies to your rig! Be prepared with the full gamut of subsurface offerings.
