In the state of Colorado, there are over 2,000 lakes that sit above 10,000 feet in elevation and many of them are home to some darn good-looking high alpine trout. While it's safe to say that all of our favorite high country lakes and creeks are still in the grips of winter, the days of exploring the Colorado alpine in search of cutthroat and brook trout are getting closer every day. With that in mind, we're excited to welcome guide and author Phil Tereyla to the Denver shop for his presentation "Fly Fishing Colorado's High Mountain Lakes."
Phil, who authored "Flyfisher's Guide to Colorado's Easy Access Mountain Lakes", has been guiding along the South Platte since his days in college at University of Northern Colorado with our own Tanner Smith. While he spends his days guiding on the South Platte, Phil has spent many a summer day exploring Colorado's high country in search of trout.
Phil's presentation will take place at the Denver shop on May 12th, 2022, from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM!
Topics to be discussed: Seasonality, Hatches, Rigging, Strategies, Fly Choice, identifying your next alpine destination, and much much more. There will also be plenty of time for Q&A!
I grew up in Colorado Springs, Colorado and began fly fishing when I was ten years old. Growing up I had two passions: fly fishing and hockey. Playing hockey allowed me to travel a great deal and even spend a season playing Jr. A in Minnesota following high school.
I eventually decided to hang up the skates and begin my pursuit of a career in Fly Fishing. While attending the University of Northern Colorado, I began to guide full time on the South Platte River drainage while obtaining a degree in History. From 2011 to 2019, looking for additional avenues to teach anglers, I served as a contributor with American Angler Magazine. Along with text and photography work with the American Angler, my book The Flyfisher’s Guide to Colorado’s Easy Access Mountain Lakes was released in July of 2021.
Along with writing and photography, I also am a contracted signature fly designer with Montana Fly Company. My true passion is sharing the sport of fly fishing with others and am beyond grateful for the time shared on the water with great people. I currently work with Angler’s Covey Fly Shop and Guide Service in Colorado Springs.
