It's no secret, we're big fans of the Orvis Helios 3. One might say that with the accuracy, feel, and line speed generated by the rod, that it's a work of art. Well, Orvis doubled down and collaborated with Tim Johnson, a Utah-based artist and creator of the "Timmy Grip", to create real functional, fishable works of art - a Limited run of Artist Edition Helios 3s. The Limited Artist Edition comes in two flavors: (1) Orvis Limited Artist Helios 3F 9 foot 5 weight (2) Orvis Limited Artist Helios 3D 9 foot 8 weight.
The 5 weight edition sports a hand burned brown trout rising to a mayfly on the cork grip. In place of the traditional white flag that we've become accustomed to on the Orvis Helios 3, lays an understated olive flag that is befitting of any trout stream. Conversely, the 8 weight edition features a hand burned bonefish dropping down to eat a crab. Like the 5 weight edition, the white Orvis flag has been replaced. For this Artist Edition, it's been replaced with a blue Orvis flag perfect for the front of any saltwater skiff.
During last week's IFTD here in Denver, we had the opportunity to watch Tim work. It's impressive to say the least and the result is a beautiful, yet still very functional work of art. We wouldn't blame you if you never took it out on the water, but, the "Timmy Grips" are meant to be fished. Hours of work go into painstakingly hand-burning permanent artwork into the cork grip of these Limited Artist Editions. Get yours before they're gone!
