Road Trip: Steelhead Part II

Ivan Orsic / Oct 24, 2012

The Klickitat River

The Klickitat River is located in Southern Washington and runs from near the base of Mount Adams to the Columbia River.

Hub City: Portland Oregon (117 miles to Goldendale, WA – hotel/motel options; the town of Klickitat – 90 miles)

Summer Run Steelhead Season: August-November

Peak Season: September 15-November 15

Average Steelhead Size: 8-12 lbs (18-20 lb fish caught occasionally)

Steelhead: wild and hatchery

Primary Technique: nymph fishing with an indicator (although you can certainly swing flies)

Guide Service: The Evening Hatch - 509.773.3460 - Keven Samuelson - $450 (float, 2 person)

Do it yourself options do exist on the Klickitat

The Lowdown: again, the proximity of the Klickitat to Portland Oregon makes this a fairly easy to reach destination. The Klick also gives you a fairly high probability of hooking into a 10+ lb wild steelhead. If you have never casted a spey rod or prefer to fish from a boat, the Klickitat might be a good option to think about if you are just beginning to fish for steelhead.
