The last time I brought a brand new reel down to a saltwater environment without having fished it before, things did not end well. After the first fish I hooked took it on a blistering 150 yard run the reel failed and I struggled trying to hand line the fish in. I was not a happy camper.

Before I took our recent trip to the Bahamas, I gave the Sage 4280 a thorough field-testing here on the South Platte River. I let a number or carp run this reel into the backing of my fly line – no problem. Down on the flats of South Andros – same thing. No problem. The drag system on this reel is easy to manipulate and control. I had a number of fairly good size fish tear out line and take long and energetic runs and the 4280 performed flawlessly during the entire trip.
