GEAR GUIDE || Ten Picks for Fall Nymphing

Ivan Orsic / Oct 25, 2020

Many would argue that fall is the best season to spend on the water in the Rockies. If we're being frank, it's hard to argue with those people. From brisk autumn mornings spent sipping coffee on the tailgate to chasing trout that are eagerly looking to put on a couple of pounds before winter arrives, fall in the Rockies can be pretty spectacular. Undoubtedly, one of the most effective ways to hook into some fall fish is nymphing, especially on your favorite tailwater.

With that in mind, we've put together a collection of gear that will help you get ready to start picking apart your favorite tailwater this fall.

Orvis Recon Fly Rod

Whether you're nymphing with a suspended rig (aka a bobber...I mean indicator rig) or you're testing out the world of Euro Nymphing, we suggest giving the 10 foot 4 weight Orvis Recon a try. The Orvis Recon teams high-performance feel with lightness in hand. With close-in loading ability and the power for longer reach, the rods feature a modern shadow green blank and covert black nickel hardware. It's a great fall nymphing stick.

Orvis Hydros Fly Reel

When you're nymphing in fall, you're often using light tippet. Enter the fully sealed drag with stacked carbon and stainless steel disc washers of the Orvis Hydros. The drag is still one of the strongest in the industry, with zero start-up inertia. Matte type II anodized finish, standard large arbor size which balances better with lighter-weight fly rod, and yet still offers excellent retrieval rates and less line coiling than standard arbor reels.

Fishpond Tacky Daypack Fly Box

Looking to keep all of your like flies in one small, well-designed, easy accessible, durable, stylish fly box...well, look no further.

SIMMS G3 Guide Pant

The low flows of fall (and winter) mean you don't have to wade that deep. The comfortable, super durable, breathable G3 Guide Pants are a great option this time of year. Like the standard G3s, the Pants feature the same Four-Layer GORE-TEX construction that will keep you dry and moving freely.

Simms Guide Windbloc Foldover Mitt

Fishing with gloves is tough. Fishing with the Windbloc Foldover Mitts is not as tough. Consider the Windbloc Foldover Mitts for your fall on the water.

Loon Deep Soft Weight

The difference between a good day and a great day of fishing is often one splitshot. But, if you want a little more control, Loon Deep Soft Weight is a great option. It's tungsten putty that is applied, adjusted, and sinks quickly. Need we say more?

Rising Lunker Net 24" Handle

With 24 inches of reach, the Rising Net is the perfect net for any serious angler. That extra reach makes it easier to net that fall trophy without putting too much undo stress on your lighter fall tippet.

Simms Dockwear Wool Beanie

The timeless angler's wool watchcap keeps your head warm when the temps are still a little bit too chilly on that autumn morning.

Umpqua Ledges ZS2 650 Waist Pack

The ultimate flyfishing beast-of-burden, the Ledges 650's stiff back-panel and padded waist belt provide all-day comfort and easy rotation.

Simms ExStream Bicomp Fishing Hoody

Now available in Admiral Blue and Dark Bronze, the Simms Exstream Bicomp Fishing Hoody is the perfect under-waders, stand-alone, or layering jacket for the colder days on the water. The water-shedding insulated Bicomp Hoody with warmth capturing stitchless-quilt construction in the upper and a stretch-fleece lower for effortless layering under Simms' waders and bibs.
