GEAR GUIDE || Ten Picks for Fall Redfish

Ivan Orsic / Sep 16, 2020

As summer gives way to fall, there's a lot of great fishing to be had here in the Rocky Mountains. But, for some of us, fall and early winter mean it's time to head south to Louisiana to chase giant bull redfish in the Marsh. Targeting a 30-pound redfish can make any angler weak in the knees, but being prepared for big fish and the harsh weather that can accompany them will help you tackle the task at hand.

Combine the challenges that fall and winter in the LA Marsh present with a gamefish that can put a real big bend in a 9 weight, there's no sense in showing up under-gunned when you make your fall pilgrimage to the salt.

With that in mind, we've put together a collection of gear that will help you get ready to chase big bull reds in the Gulf this fall.

Sage Igniter Fly Rod

The most demanding conditions require a different kind of tool. Strong head wind? Fish at distance? Bulky rigs? Heavy sink-tips? The IGNITER is tuned to handle the most technical of conditions. Not a rod for the everyday angler, the IGNITER is equipped with a high line speed taper to carry large amounts of line at distance with wind cutting performance. Perfect for streamer fishing with heavy sink tips or covering big water when conditions turn south. If you bring the will, the IGNITER will supply the way.

Nautilus NVG 8/9 Fly Reel

Big fish pull hard. Big saltwater fish pull harder. When you want to put the brakes to a big swamp-dwelling bull red, you need big brakes. The NV-G series are built on the tried, tested and trusted NV 5/6 through NV Monster frames, and they feature the patented and award-winning NV CCF Disc Braking System.

The G-Spool design transforms your NV reels into uber-arbor fly reels that pick up line faster than any other comparable reel in the market. The G-Spool (Giga Spool) design reduces the reel weight significantly and generates less line coiling and much faster line retrieval (up to 15 inches per turn on the G-10!).

SIMMS GTS Rod & Reel Vault

The SIMMS GTS Rod & Reel Vault is the ultimate rod & reel storage and transport system. Complete with backpack straps and compartments to safely stow your reels, rods, terminal tackle, tools, and other travel necessities, this carry-on rod & reel vault is a must-have for the traveling angler.

RIO Winter Redfish Fly Line

You gotta take the right tools for the job and when the water cools down into late fall and winter, you need a fly line with the right taper to deliver big, heavy flies to big hungry bulls. RIO's Winter Redfish line is designed specifically for anglers targeting big gulf Reds in cooler conditions. The line features a short, powerful front taper that has no problem turning over large mullet and baitfish patterns. The short, easy casting head ensures the line loads up at close range. The line has slick coating and medium-stiff core that will not tangle in cooler conditions.

Umpqua ZS2 Boat Bag - Medium

A couple of fly boxes, some fluorocarbon, big game pliers, extra fly lines, and your valuable electronics need somewhere to stay when you're in a boat. The ZS2 Boat Bag is the answer to your problems.

Keep your valuables dry and organized in this perfect balance of external functionality and internal protection. Highly structured lid supports ZS2 Fly Patch and hemostat station for easy access. YKK weather-proof zipper and internal elevated rim keeps your contents dry in the worst of squalls & splash. Perfect, snag-free design and size for moving in and out of boat deck storage.

Scientific Anglers Absolute Fluorocarbon Shock Tippet

Big game requires big terminal tackle and the Absolute Fluorocarbon Shock Tippet is perfect for those hefty fall and winter redfish. With extreme abrasion resistance for Saltwater and Predatory fish, this stuff gets the job done.

Simms Challenger Fishing Bib & Jacket

If it were socially acceptable to wear a fishing bib everywhere, I would. Frankly, I'll any excuse to wear a fishing bib. However, when heading south to chase bull reds, bibs are mandatory. Combine cold saltwater with cold, but humid air and a couple of splashes or a rainstorm will leave you out in the cold if you're not properly prepared. The SIMMS Challenger Fishing Bib is up for the...challenge. Get the jacket to match.
