We're on the verge of Trico season. For some of us, it's our favorite time of the year. For others, we'd wish trout would completely ignore those blasted bite-size black and white mayflies and opt for a larger, more protein-rich meals like a hopper or three. But, there's no denying that when the clouds of tricos start showing up around 9 AM and trout start to hone in on the coinciding spinner fall, that you should be prepared because it just so happens that trout like eating gobs and gobs of tiny mayflies.
With that in mind, we've put together a collection of gear that will help you get ready for the best worst hatch that we absolutely love or hate...depending on the day.
RIO Premier Technical Trout Fly Line
When the trout are being finicky need the ultimate in finesse presentation, it's hard to beat the all-new RIO Premier Technical Trout Fly Line. The Technical Trout features a long, fine front taper for the lightest of presentations and delicacy and is the ideal choice of line when fishing dry flies, nymphs, soft hackles and emergers to tricky eaters at distance. The line has a long head and back taper to increase loop control when carrying long lengths, and for making precise casts to rising fish, while the weight distribution makes it easy to turn over long leaders for technical feeders at range.
You might have noticed that RIO has updated their selection of lines and broken them down into two categories: Premier and Elite. The Premier versions of your favorite tapers feature SlickCast, RIO's proprietary coating technology, which creates the slickest, most durable fly lines on the market. Lab tests show that lines built with SlickCast have the least amount of friction ever measured in a fly line. In addition, the line features MaxFloat Tip Technology, RIO's proprietary tip coating formula that floats more than twice as high as regular line tips, without any increase in diameter.
You can certainly slap a trico down on the surface of the water, but we wouldn't recommend it. That's why we love the delicate touch and medium action of the TROUT LL fly rod. Through blank taper optimization and specialized length offerings, the TROUT LL is perfected for wade fishing, closer casts, small flies, and light tippets. It's taylor made for the technical fishing involved with tossing the right size 24 trico spinner to the right fish at the right time.
