Ivan Orsic / Sep 7, 2016

The lodge is located in the extreme northern part of Corrientes Province in northeastern Argentina. We’ll be fishing on the upper portion of the Parana River, approximately 20 miles upstream from the confluence with the Paraguay River. In addition to Dorado, we will also fish for Pacu and Pira Pita.

We will have the entire lodge to ourselves and space is limited to a total of 8 anglers. The cost for 7 nights and 6 days of fishing is $4,450 per person based on double room occupancy and one boat and guide per two anglers. Also included: all meals, wine, beer, flies, fishing license and transportation between the local airport and the lodge.

Dorado at Parana on the Fly Lodge

Season is January through May and then September and October Upper Parana River. This section of the Parana River is located in the extreme northern part of Corrientes Province in northeastern Argentina. As a tail water of the Yacyreta Hydroelectric Dam it flows for 180 miles until its junction with the Paraguay River. The upper section of the Parana is known for its stable clear waters and reliable conditions which make it one of the most predictable Dorado fisheries in South America. The lodge is located approximately 90 miles south of the dam and 20 mile upriver from the confluence with the Paraguay River.

The Fishing

The Dorado (Salminius Maxilosus) is clearly the main target on this river. They range in size from 4 to 30 pounds, with the possibility of fish up to 35 pounds. Our fishing will be done from 17 foot Carolina Skiffs equipped with 90hp four stroke motors. Remotely controlled electric motors, are used by the guides for a silent approach to the fishing areas. We primarily fish river branches, the heads of islands and along deep cuts of the main river. Our focus is on structure (fallen trees, rocks, and cut banks) that provides ideal feeding locations for natural hunters like the Dorado. The Pacu has the profile of a permit and ranges in size between 3 and 30 pounds. We target these highly combative fish, using flies that imitate fruit, in the slow flowing current below overhanging fruit trees. Flies are dead drifted which makes the surface take extremely exciting. Pacu are a rewarding catch due to their size and power. The Pira Pita is referred to as the Parana Salmon because of its red meat, though it looks nothing like a salmon. It’s an acrobatic fighter and can be caught on large attractor flies such as Chernobyl Ants. Pira Pita, indiscriminate feeders, eat both plants and animals. Expect fish to range between 2 and 12 pounds.

Surface Action for Dorado

Another unique technique for catching large Dorado is with surface actions patterns such as mouse, gurglers and even poppers tied on size 3/0 and 4/0 hooks.

Dorado Flies

The Dorado flies are a variety of large deceivers with feather tails and craft fur heads around small metallic eyes. Tied in a variety of color combinations and typically 5 to 6 inches long. The guides will provide all the needed flies for the trip.

Sight Fishing

The Carolina Skiffs can be transformed to flats boats with a poling platform for the guide and anglers alternating turns on the bow. This technique adds to the unique variety of the fishing program. Typically this style of fishing is only available when water clarity is optimal.

The Lodge

The lodge is located a few miles upstream from the town of Itati and overlooks the Parana River. It accommodates eight anglers on a double occupancy basis, and each room has its own bathroom. Our local chef prepares traditional Argentine meals accompanied with some of the best wines of Argentina. A selection of complimentarydrinks is also available at the lodge bar.
