Trouts Proudly Welcomes Eric Schmidt to the Team!

Ivan Orsic / Jul 9, 2019

Trouts is proud to welcome Eric Schmidt into the fold as our Denver Regional Store Manager. Eric has been chasing anything that swims with his fly rod since his days as a middle schooler getting after Bluegill on poppers.

With all that in mind, we wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know Eric. Without further adieu, let's see what makes Eric tick on the water.

Colorado Rainbow

Trouts: Let's start this from the top- how did you get your start fly-fishing and what keeps you heading back to the river every chance you get?

ES: I found an ancient fly rod with an equally old automatic reel in the corner of our garage when I was in 8th grade. It was a curiosity at first but then I took it out to the bass pond and started catching big Bluegill on poppers. As they say, the rest is history. I keep going back because I really enjoy the differences you find each time out and learning something new every time I go.

Trouts: Describe your perfect day on the water?

ES: Overcast, spitting rain and mayflies popping. Catching a few fish with friends and having a beer or two on the tailgate at dark.

Channel Cat on the fly.

Trouts: If you could only fish one fly in Colorado for the next 365 days, what would it be and why?

ES: I hate this question! I'm a fly tier so I don't ever like the idea of only having one fly to fish. But If I have to fish one all year It would be one of my own invention. All I can say is it is a nymph and I would want it is a size 16.

Trouts: Favorite place you've ever fished?

ES: The Rio Limay in Argentina. The scenery is beautiful, the fish are big, the people are kind and courteous and the food is incredible.

Argentina Rainbow

Trouts: Favorite river in Colorado?

ES: I really like the Front Range Creeks but my favorite is the Arkansas River. There is a ton of access, you can fish all water types and it just keeps getting better every year.

Trouts: Destination to dream about?

ES: Labrador. I like Brookies and would love the opportunity to catch one in the 8-pound range.

Trouts: What is the best piece of fishing advice you've ever been given?

ES: Don't be in a rush to learn it all. You won't ever know it all so take your time and enjoy the process.

Golden Bones

Trouts: When not fishing, what are we most likely to find you doing?

ES: Watching my son play baseball or tying flies.
