With the move to the new and bigger shop, there are a lot of new faces around the shop these days and we wanted to familiarize you with the new team members. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be introducing some of the new and less familiar faces around the shop. Today, we're talking with our brand new eCommerce Assistant, Sam Footlik.
If you place an order online or log on to LiveChat on our website, chances are you'll be talking with Sam. With all that in mind, we wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know Sam. Without further adieu, let's see what makes Mr. Footlick tick on the water.
Trouts: Let's start this from the top- how did you get your start fly-fishing and what keeps you heading back to the river every chance you get?
SF: I started fly-fishing with Dad in the marsh flats outside of Jacksonville, Florida. While then I was much too inexperienced to actually produce anything to show for it, it definitely kindled a fire that exploded once I made it out to Colorado. What keeps me heading back to the river every chance I get is the solitude and opportunity to clear the mind that fly fishing offers.
Trouts: Describe your perfect day on the water?
SF: My perfect day on the water involves early mornings, clear skies, and active fish! I like the spend some time making sure everything that I can control is in order prior to starting my day, and when that first fish is on the excitement that everything is going to plan can’t be topped by much else.
Trouts: If you could only fish one fly in Colorado for the next 365 days, what would it be and why?
SF: I would have to go with a purple JuJu Baetis. Whether fished on a tandem nymph rig or dropped below an attractor dry, that fly has brought more fish to the net then much else for me.
Trouts: Favorite place you've ever fished?
SF: I think the favorite place that I have fished would be the Eagle River. Being that my family is based out Vail as of recently, I have had countless days fishing with my close family members that I will never forget.
Trouts: Favorite river in Colorado?
SF: Gotta be the South Platte. When I was really starting to invest my time into fly-fishing the South Platte provided an amazing opportunity to really test my skills and pushed me to learn, grow, and become the angler that I am today.
Trouts: Destination to dream about?
SF: I have been daydreaming about a trip into the backcountry of the North Island of New Zealand for a while now. Seeing how big and untouched those fish are, just get me fired up.
Trouts: What is the best piece of fishing advice you've ever been given?
SF: The best advice I’ve been given is to not over complicate things. I think a lot of people get wrapped up in the technicalities of fly fishing and lose touch of the beauty and simplicity that is really the core.
Trouts: When not fishing, what are we most likely to find you doing?
SF: When I’m not fishing (or working in the shop) you’ll find me relaxing and catching up on Netflix, Sports, and trying out new recipes in the kitchen.
