WATCH: El Palometa Cubano - Fly Fishing for Permit in Cayo Cruz, CUBA

Ivan Orsic / Jun 10, 2019

CUBA didn't disappoint. The flats of Cayo Cruz were expansive. At times, it felt like you were on a different planet. Nothing on the horizon, but inviting, fishy flats. Filled with permit, tarpon and bonefish, Cayo Cruz's flats were staggering.

Permit have a penchant for torturing skilled fly anglers. Our own Rick Mikesell describes them as dishonest. He was once told that permit are the only fish that won't eat when you do everything right. For that reason, they're a bit of a healthy (or unhealthy) obsession for those anglers who spend time fishing saltwater flats. Heading into our trip to Cayo Cruz, Tucker Ladd, owner of Trouts Fly Fishing, hadn't caught a permit in four years. That's not a function of time and effort. He's chased them on the fly each of the last four years. This trip was a little bit different.
