February is our last real month of winter here in the Rockies. There is plenty of winter weather ahead of us. However, as we progress through February and into March, the days will continue to get longer and hints of spring will make their presence felt. Midges will still be the primary food source for tailwater and freestone trout alike. However, blue-winged olives, "big spring midges", and stoneflies will become more active as we progress out of the grips of winter.
For this month's episode, the three amigos - Trouts' own Zeke Hersh, Scott Dickson, and Tanner Smith spent a day on the Yampa River below Stagecoach. We saw plenty of midges (small & big) and blue-winged olives on the surface and fishing was productive. It was everything we like about a February day on the water.
