What Can $7500 Do For the Denver South Platte?

Ivan Orsic / Jan 2, 2018

Last week, we announced the inaugural Throwback Thursday Fly Fishing Film Fest, a night of throwback fly fishing films to help benefit the Denver South Platte. We wanted to take a moment and go into a bit more detail about our fundraising goals for the night and what these funds will help accomplish. As noted last week, all of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Denver Trout Unlimited. Denver Trout Unlimited has played an extremely important role in many of the recent positive changes we've seen on the Denver South Platte. As part of the Chatfield Reallocation Project, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado Water Conservation Board created an ENVIRONMENTAL POOL of water at Chatfield to increase the South Platte's flows through metro Denver. The water from this environmental pool will be released through Colorado Parks and Wildlife's fish hatchery at Chatfield Reservoir into the South Platte River. The goal of this restoration and revitalization project is to restore the river to a condition in which trout can reproduce. In the past, especially during the winter months, the river has too little water to support healthy trout populations. In fact, historically, there are about 60 zero flow days in the winter where no water flows out of Chatfield. These low-flow periods have put undue stress on trout in the Denver South Platte. By securing this environmental pool, the South Platte will maintain a healthy, sustainable flow through the leaner winter months which only means good things for those DSP trout and the bugs that those DSP trout feast on.

It costs $7,500 to store an acre-foot of water in the environmental pool in Chatfield. Earlier this year, DTU helped to secure ten acre-feet of water (one of which Trouts Fly Fishing proudly purchased) in Chatfield Reservoir. We want to extend our reach and help secure yet another acre-foot of water for the environmental pool. Another acre-foot means more water for our home town trout. Our goal is to raise another $7,500 during the Throwback Thursday Fly Fishing Film Fest through ticket sales, donations, and during the silent auction of the gear donated by our proud sponsors, including Scott Fly Rods, Yeti Coolers, Ross Reels, Simms Fishing Products, Fishpond, Abel Reels, and Costa. We look forward to seeing you all at the Throwback Thursday Fly Fishing Film Fest.
