TRIP SUMMARY

Epic day down at the ol' Dirty D! To be honest I would have ranked it a 5/5 but couldn't bring myself to do it given the water clarity. We've had a wild few weeks here in CO w/ recent rains. Generally when looking at stream flows, Deckers usually pushes 20-30 more cfs than what is coming out of the dam below Cheesman Reservoir. This weekend things were a little bit different! Right now they are releasing water at 55 cfs into Cheesman Canyon. Horse Creek is dumping a bunch of dirty water into the South Platte at Deckers corner and flows are approximately 240 cfs. Visibility is right around 18 inches and the fishing is awesome! In higher water fish tend to push towards the edges. Don't get far bank syndrome- often times a short 10 foot cast in the slack water is going to be the one to get it done! Saw sporadic caddis and BWO's popping throughout the day. Didn't touch a fish on a caddis or baetis nymph- high water has fish gorging on worms (pink and tan) and leeches (brown, olive, and black). To be honest, color didn't seem to matter. If you put it in front of them, they're going to eat it. Use enough weight to get your bugs down in the zone quickly. As water clarity continues to improve, fishing should as well!
