TRIP SUMMARY

Great day at Deckers today. Had some first time fly fishers and they really picked it up quick! Nymphing was the name of the game early on. Caddis larvae and pupa seemed to be the desired offerings first thing in the morning. By mid morning we saw fish rising to small midge emergers at the bottom of the run. We switched to a total different approach and tied on some size 22 massacre midges to a tapered leader and applied floatant to the entire tippet and leader, placing the small emerger right in the surface film. Although we could not see the flies when casting to the trout, we knew roughly where they were and any time a trout rose in that vicinity we would set the hook. This produced several really nice fish over the course of the hatch. After lunch we switched to dries completely and caught some nice rising trout on size 18 elk hair caddis. By 2:00 the pmd’s were coming off and the trout were completely committed to taking adults off the surface. A size 18 sparkle dun in pmd fooled trout after trout for the remainder of the day. A really great day for throwing dries!!! Good luck out there!
