River Information

Homestake Creek is a wonderful little fishery situated in the Vail Valley that also serves as a tributary for the Eagle River. The creek is full of small to medium-sized Brown and Rainbow trout, with a few Brook trout mixed in as well. The river very scenic, easy to wade, and great for the beginning angler or those looking to escape the crowds and pressure of the more "popular" rivers in the area. By definition, this creek is a tailwater but fishes much more like a high elevation freestone.

Seasonal Conditions

Homestake Creek is primarily fished from late Spring through Fall. This creek does not see any prolific hatches so to speak, however, there are usually some bugs to be found and fish willing to cooperate. The summer months are when Homestake will really shine and an angler shouldn't need to look much further than a dry/dropper rig to put fish in the net. There are a few deeper pools, runs and beaver ponds on the creek where a small, weighted nymph rig might be appropriate to prospect for a bigger bite.

RECOMMENDED FLIES

Late Spring/Summer/Fall: Attractor dry flies, Terrestrials, Mayflies, Caddis, Small Stoneflies
