Current River Flow Updates

Latest Update: 10/1/23

Muddy Creek is flowing at 29 CFS. Very low, slow and clear water make this a challenging fishery at the moment. Sporadic hatches of BWO's can result in large fish feeding on the surface, however they are very spooky. Long, light leaders and tippet, small flies, a stealthy approach and a perfect presentation are all necessary to find success targeting pods of risers here.

River Information

Muddy Creek is a tributary of the Colorado River and provides anglers another great option to pursue both Rainbow and Brown trout in the Colorado River Basin. The creek is split in half by Wolford Reservoir and the most popular section to fish is the tailwater section below the dam. The majority of the river above the reservoir is privately owned. Below the dam, anglers have approximately 5 miles of river to explore. The river sits in a farily wide open meadow and doesn't provide much protection from the elements. The trout in Muddy Creek grow to respectable sizes and 14"-16" fish are not uncommon. Reports of fish much larger than that below the dam are somewhat frequent as well.

Seasonal Conditions

Muddy Creek fishes best during the summer months where anglers typically have success throwing hopper/dropper rigs tight to the grassy undercut banks. One item to note here- the bugs, particulary horseflies, can be very thick up here at times. Anglers should make sure to bring plenty of bug spray and wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt.

From a bug perspective, Muddy Creek is not too technical. Midges will be a primary food source, as will a variety of mayflies, general attractor dry flies and terrestrial patterns. A dry/dropper rig should be sufficient in the summer months.
