Current River Flow Updates

Latest Update 10/14/23

The St. Vrain at Lyons is flowing at 20 CFS. Hopper droppers can still be fishing well through town at these flows on warmer days, #12-16 chubbies and hippy stompers trailed by beadhead pheasant tails, quills and perdigons in a #16-20 are all great choices. If fish seem to be refusing these larger offerings, try an indicator rig incorporating baetis and midge patterns such as RS2's and zebra midges in a #18-22.

Historical River Flow

River Information

The St. Vrain is created from runoff that begins in the high altitude peaks of Wild Basin. From the town of Allenspark to all the way downstream in the town of Lyons, the St. Vrain has a little something for everyone. The river is home to several of our favorite species, and its known to have a few trophies too.

Seasonal Conditions

The N. Fork in Allenspark is only fishable from May-September due to freezing conditions. The stretch of river that flows through the town of Lyons can be fished year round. In the late summer months, there is a prolific stonefly hatch that occurs for weeks on end. Dry fly action is the best from May-October. Stonefly, caddis, & mayfly nymphs are abundant sub-surface throughout the year.

River access

The N. Fork of the St. Vrain is best accessed via the Wild Basin entrance of RMNP in Allenspark. Further downstream, the main branch of the St. Vrain flows through Button Rock Nature Preserve. This area is loaded with great pocket water. Even further downstream, the creek eventually reaches the town of Lyons. The stretch through Lyons has recently been renovated with various stream side improvements.
