Unmatched Accuracy, Now Offered in Two Flavors! The "F" is for feel in the Helios 3F. It's the rod for short to medium distance - out to 60 feet. You'll feel every nuance of the rod when you cast. The "D" is for distance in the Helios 3D. It's the rod you should grab if you want to put a streamer on a dime at sixty feet. And, when the opportunities are way out there and the windows are small, the Helios 3D gives you the advantage.
No cast ever thrown is identical to any other cast ever thrown. The variables of caster, rod, and conditions are too great. Helios 3F and 3D were designed to significantly reduce the variables at the point of release focusing the energy of the cast to the intended target. No matter what happens behind you the energy of the forward cast is crisply released through a tight window created by the most significant reduction in horizontal and vertical tip frequency ever conceived. It is a rifle in a world of muskets and it autocorrects the variables of the cast to the target with incomparable precision.
This was accomplished with a strategically reinforced blank that is stronger, yet remarkably has a lighter swing weight than previous Helios rods. This increased hoop strength prevents the blank from ovalizing when flexed, damping the vibration as the rod unloads and the line is released forward with significantly reduced sine waves taking a truer path to the target. This increased strength also makes the Helios 3 stronger and more durable with an 85" deflection distance to breakage as compared to 54" for Helios and 72" for Helios 2.
Orvis designed the Helios 3D fly rod to cast at impressive distances without sacrificing power—and it hits the mark every time. They've reduced the variables at the point of release to focus the energy behind every cast. Increased hoop strength means reduced vibration for a crisp release every time, because everyone knows accuracy is paramount. The H3D rod churns out precise casts that are the stuff of legend—because it’s the pinpoint delivery of flies that takes you from a quiet day on the water to battling predator fish ripping down the flats.
Pushing through a gusty saltwater wind is no big deal—the Helios 3D has the power to get your fly there, and the accuracy to drop it right where you want it. Whatever the location, whatever the fish, the H3D is ready for it: big rivers or saltwater, bonefish or bass—those accurate drops earn more bends in the rod, it’s as simple as that. Get the most accurate fly rod in existence and land more fish on every trip.
Have had this rod for about 3 years now and have fished Montana and Wyoming delicately delivering big foam dries, to swinging streamers on cold east coast mornings for big hungry brookies. It’s powerful enough for those big heavy articulated streamers and delicate for winter midges on light tippit. Love the rod in any circumstance.
I have the 9' 5wt. It's my go to for nearly every situation and perfect for nearly every river in Colorado. I tried the 3F and while the sensitivity was slightly better, I found that the 3D casts so much easier and with much greater accuracy without losing much feel. I use this thing all the time. It's awesome for nymphing and dries - casting right at my feet or all the way across the river. And it's sensitive enough to use for Euro - I learned the tight-line method starting with this rod. You can't go wrong with this one.
Purchased the 905 a few months ago and have never regretted the decision. This rod is deadly accurate and can huck line as far as you'll ever need. I also own a 7wt recon and a 4wt clearwater as well, they're all great rods, but the Helios 3 is definitely on another level. The more I fish it, the more I fall in love with it.
I have the 5wt, 9’. It seems super stiff at first, but then you instantly realize the power and precision. My friends all love it too. Powerful feel. This isn’t like other rods, but I can’t describe it. I have a Sage X too and I prefer this rod to the sage X for most days. It’s my go too rod but I do use the Sage if I’m just throwing dries. Let’s be real, your gonna own a bunch or rods, this should be one of them.
