RIO's Trout VersiLeaders are designed for the fly fisher who needs a quick-change option for converting a floating line to a sink tip. Each VersiLeader is tapered for the best in performance and has a 12lb nylon core coated in PVC. A neat, bullet-proof welded loop at the butt end allows for fast rigging.
I like the idea but it just doesn't work for me. I have a couple in my bag, just in case I get to a deep hole of a still water, where I need to jig but this really feels like you are throwing a remote. It feels wonky coming out of the tip of the rod. I'd prefer to switch my reel out to an intermediate line. But it does what it says. It gets you down.
I don’t have back up spools loaded with different lines for any of my setups.
So, rather than drop $500 on additional setups, I carry a few different weights of the versileader on me.
The heaviest of these worked wonders fishing streamers on the Colorado at around 600cfs even on my standard floating line.
There are a number of different sink rates so you can play around and figure out what gets you to your preferred position in the water column.
Make sure you know the perfection or hanging loop knots so that you can attach tippet to the small tapered end!
