East River

River Information

The East River gets its start from Emerald Lake just north of Crested Butte. This medium sized river is full of wild trout and also sees a Kokanee Salmon spawning run every fall. The East is one of the two rivers that come together to form the Gunnison River near Almont.

Seasonal Conditions

The East is fishable year round. The river experiences some phenomenal hatches, particularly Green Drakes, in the summer and the dry fly fishing can be incredible. Summer and Fall will be the best times to visit here.

River Access

River access is limited on the East. The majority of this river is privately owned. A public section is designated as a Wild Trout Stream from the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery downstream for approximately one mile.
