I've had the same Battenkill reel for over 20 years on my favorite rod, a 7 weight. It just works. It's not a real exotic look but it's a classic look that never goes out of style. It just feels good in your hand. It feels solid. None of the pieces feel cheap, like you might get with most reels at this price point. I've never had any issues with the drag, the clicker, or pulling off the reel. If you are using an orvis rod, this reel is a no brainer. Great design, better price point.
Having used or handled a number of reels over the years -- everything from Pflueger Medalists to TFO NXTs and the Ross Colorado series -- I can absolutely recommend the Orvis Battenkill reel to anyone looking for something to handle most of what Colorado has to offer. I use two (a size I with a 2wt line and a size II with a 5wt line), and both have functioned perfectly for multiple years. The simple design is great for smaller fish (all those 6-12 inch brookies, and 10-14 inch rainbows) in Colorado's high-elevation streams and lakes. They are straightforward, simple, and sturdy, and look classic and traditional to boot. Get one!
Aside from some trouble with the clicker not working (just had to put something back in place). Works great for my little butter stick and really fun to fight little trout on. I have the smallest with no drag on it. Would rec.
If you want an old school set up.
