The new Orvis Hydros Reel is the result of our own desire to make something great, that much better. We took a best-selling reel and removed unnecessary material to further reduce the weight while stiffening the narrow spool, which minimizes line stacking. We changed the drag knob to be more ergonomically accessible and comfortable to use. We further refined the seal on the sealed drag to protect the clutch bearing in the drag mechanism. We radiused the reel foot as on the Mirage for kink-free leader protection. The fully sealed drag with stacked carbon and stainless steel disc washers is still one of the strongest in the industry, with zero start-up inertia. Matte type II anodized finish, standard large arbor size which balances better with lighter-weight fly rod, and yet still offers excellent retrieval rates and less line coiling than standard arbor reels. Refinement and improvement are the hallmarks of quality. Matte black with silver accents, matte silver with charcoal accents. Imported.
Got the IV (7-9wt) and this is definitely big enough for 9wt line. It would likely be too big for 7wt. The design is blocky but not bad. It's light and line in/out is smooth so it's a nice reel for the price. Drag is smooth and strong. May get another someday.
This is my second hydros reel and Orvis really stepped it up on the updates. I have this on my 7 weight streamer rod and everything about it fits perfectly. Great retrieve with any amount of line out, smooth drag, and easy to maintain. The price point was perfect for my budget and obtaining a quality reel. Plus the matte black looks amazing even after being banged around.
Orvis always makes quality products at the right price and this reel fits the bill perfectly.
Goes great with my recon rod. Smooth reel with a pleasing sound to it. Smooth drag as well. Great reel for the money!
Lightweight and reliable. The drag adjustments are great for the range of rivers and fish in Colorado. Highly recommend it as a mid-tier option that is reasonably priced.
The new Hydros fixes some of the minor issues with earlier versions including a much improved drag knob and a slightly smaller and lighter reel. I have the II on my 5 wt and for Colorado fishing it sometimes feels like too much reel but it performs well and I would buy it again.
