Trouts is proud to welcome John "Jah" Spriggs to our Frisco guide roster. You might know Jah from his antics as a pro-skier - "Book of Pow" anyone? But, to us, Spriggs is one of Summit County's finest fly fishing guides in or out of a boat and we're excited to welcome him into the fold.
With all that in mind, we wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know Jah Spriggs. Without further adieu, let's see what makes John tick on the water.
Trouts: Let’s start this from the top - What parallels do you see between skiing and fly fishing?
Spriggs: For myself, the focus you have in both sports is very similar, you need to be very much in the moment and in tune with your surroundings. Another parallel is the beautiful scenery and the amazing places both sports can take you too. I also love them both for their yin-yang aspects. Fishing is slower and mellower than the high injury risk skiing I like to do. So they compliment each other nicely and keep me coming back year after year!
Trouts: How did you get your start fly-fishing and what keeps you heading back to the river every chance you get?
Spriggs: I started fly-fishing when I was 12, My family and I took a free casting clinic at the local shop and that was pretty much it for me. I loved to fish already, putting the fly-rod in my hand just made the love that much stronger.
Trouts: Describe your perfect day on the water?
Spriggs: A good day on the water for me is being with good friends, not seeing any other anglers, and smacking fish on dry flies all day! It doesn't get much better than that!
Trouts: If you could only fish one fly in Colorado for the next 365 days, what would it be and why?
Spriggs: Oh that's kind of a tough one...But, I think if you are going to have the best chance to catch bigger fish all year... and not nymph for the rest of your life, I'd say the Sex Dungeon! Chuck meat till you can't feel your arm!
Trouts: Favorite place you have ever fished?
Spriggs: Dean River, Canada
Trouts: Favorite river in Colorado?
Spriggs: Colorado River, duh.
Trouts: Are there any dream fly fishing trips you’d like to make?
Spriggs: Kamchatka to mouse, Argentina for Golden Dorado, and BC Steelhead trip!
Trouts: What is the best piece of fishing advice you've ever been given?
"You'll never know, unless you go!" so get out on the river or you might miss the best day of fishing in your life!
Trouts: When not fishing, what are we most likely to find you doing?
Skiing pillow lines, Rock Climbing, and really just hanging outside in the mountains! Love em!
