For this month's episode of Five Flies, we're excited to take this party to the Live Stream. We brought our good friend, Russell Miller from Umpqua Feather Merchants. You might remember Russ from Five Flies for January when he brought a certain European flavor to Cheesman Canyon.

In an effort to reduce social contact, we decided to talk about this month's Five Flies from the comforts of our respective basements. April is a glorious month here in the Rocky Mountains. Rivers truly start to wake up this month with strong hatches of Blue-Winged Olives and Midges. Fish start to move more consistently into the riffles to feed and they're known to chase streamers with reckless abandon. Let's not forget about caddis and stoneflies starting to get active as the water temperatures rise. There's a lot to like about April on the water.

If you've fly fished for trout, chances are you caught fish on one of John Barr's iconic patterns. While his patterns produce fish year-round, April is a great month to tie on one of John Barr's signature patterns.

We hope you're all staying healthy, safe and sane out there. If you can get out on the water responsibly and safely this month, there's a lot to enjoy about April on a trout stream...or a bass pond.
