WATCH: Tying the Polar Prawn with Alec Gerbec

Ivan Orsic / Feb 16, 2023

A couple of summers ago, our good friend and legend of the salt, Alec Gerbec dropped by the shop to tie up one of his newer signature patterns with Umpqua Feather Merchants - The Polar Prawn. Alec designed this fly during his time guiding in the Seychelles. While it was designed for those Indo-Pacific flats fish, it's a great pattern for any saltwater fishery that has bonefish or permit that are feeding on shrimp or large prawn. A versatile fly, Alec likes the Polar Prawn in sizes 2, 4, and 6.

Alec is also the architect behind the famous Aphlexo Crab. His saltwater flats patterns are thoughtfully designed and on-the-water tested. For another fly-tying tutorial from Alec Gerbec, check out Tying the Alphlexo Crab.
