Historical River Flow

River Information

This section is the headwaters of the famed South Platte River. Meandering through the grassy plains of South Park the South Platte above Spinney is beautiful at all times of the year. The structure of this river is mostly riffles and runs with some great undercut banks. Trout range from 10-14" on average with a mixed bag of Rainbows and Browns, occasionally some much larger trout are caught.

Seasonal Conditions

In the warm months of summer, this section really comes alive. Streamers on the cloudy overcast or bad weather days during high water can be deadly. The best way to target fish in this stretch though has to be dry-dropper. With terrestrials and hoppers everywhere in the summer months, these fish just can't resist a well presented bushy dry. Spring and Fall are the best times for tossing streamers here. In the winter this section gets too low and generally freezes over.

Additional River Information

River access

There are quite a few different access points for the South Platte Above Spinney. A drive along 59 towards spinney has a few great access points. You can also park at Spinney and work up from the inlet. Up higher on the river, there are a few access points off of Highway 9.
