Current River Flow Updates

Latest Update: 10/23/23

The South Platte above Spinney Reservoir is flowing at 27 CFS. Hopper droppers can still work on warmer days however your best bet at the moment will be a light indicator rig. Lead with a small floss worm, egg or mini leech (#14-18) and trail a baetis or midge behind it. Patterns like RS2's, chocolate thunders, black beauties and top secrets in an #18-22 are usually a solid choice for around here in the fall. With the low flows, be using 4 or 5x to your point fly and 5 or 6x to your smaller offering. Tossing a streamer into some of the cut banks and deeper bends can also be worth a shot. Browns are on the move so enjoy watching but don't harass spawning fish!

Historical River Flow

River Information

This section is the headwaters of the famed South Platte River. Meandering through the grassy plains of South Park the South Platte above Spinney is beautiful at all times of the year. The structure of this river is mostly riffles and runs with some great undercut banks. Trout range from 10-14" on average with a mixed bag of Rainbows and Browns, occasionally some much larger trout are caught.

Seasonal Conditions

In the warm months of summer, this section really comes alive. Streamers on the cloudy overcast or bad weather days during high water can be deadly. The best way to target fish in this stretch though has to be dry-dropper. With terrestrials and hoppers everywhere in the summer months, these fish just can't resist a well presented bushy dry. Spring and Fall are the best times for tossing streamers here. In the winter this section gets too low and generally freezes over.
