As we round out another week here at the shop, it is time to give my weekly rundown of the happenings of the week, my favorite products, and of course some easy listening jams. For many across the state of Colorado, it looks like the recent drop in temperatures opened up some ski lifts and put a little dusting on some of our favorite pieces of tailwaters. As for me, I took my last trip to the alpine last weekend. It was a self-imposed strike mission to see if I could squeeze out the last drop of the alpine season. However, the 3:00 am wake-up call followed by a 14-mile hike (RT) and 2,234 ft of elevation gain only produced beautiful views, cold fingers, and a proper dusting of snow throughout the entirety of the hike. In fishing terms, this means that the fishing sucked. But, as the saying goes you don't know till you go. As I sat under a tree trying to warm up watching the proper dusting of snowfall in front of me and across the saddle in front of me I was reminded how short the Alpine season is. However, it makes for the most memorable moments and can best be classified as Type 2 fun. There is something about the gamble that I absolutely love when it comes to those alpine missions. Probably because they are not places you go very often or get the opportunity to explore year-round. They fill the soul if they turn out as planned and only leave you wondering "maybe next year" on the drive home if they don't.
Adios Alpine season, I will see you again in a few months.
Now that I am done reminiscing about the alpine season let's get into this week's recap and some easy listening jams for your weekend. Enjoy y'all
Not a product but an overall good time scheduled for next Thursday! I am going to let you know right now, there is no better way to spend next Thursday than at Trouts Fly Fishing. Next Thursday, we will be hosting our Fall Cookout and it is sure to be a great time. What's in it for you? On tap beers from Denver Beer Co (free), a fully loaded Trager grill right in time for dinner (still free!), our traditional happy hour pricing, and Edgar Diaz from Sight Line Provisions.
Tuesday we put out a pretty fantastic read going over Tailing loops. These things are probably the bane of just about every angler out on the water. I alluded to them being kinda like the boogie man, always lurking in the background waiting till you are just comfortable enough with your cast, only to ruin your day. Since I believe this to be true I thought it would be a smart idea to put out two tips on how to fix your tailing loops! If you are wanting to know how to fix them, go give it a read. We are coming into the off-season rapidly and as they say "great casters are made in the off-season"... or maybe that is just me. If you are interested in getting 1 on 1 instruction head over to our beginner casting clinics!
It is time to size down folks! As I mentioned the colder weather looks like it is here to stay for a while. With that in mind, Zeke Hersh sent out his monthly forecast for the Frisco area. As he puts it, "This is a favorite dropper pattern this time of year. In its larger sizes, this pattern works great as your heavier first dropper but also works just as well as your smaller last fly. I tend to carry this fly in the peacock but all the colors are great to have in your box this time of year." This is definitely a fly you will want to have over the coming months when you head out to his neck of the woods!
In 2018 Simms released their G3 Stockingfoot wader, and 4 years later the Simms G3 Stockingfoot wader is still the best-selling pair of waders on the market. When it comes to waders, boots, and apparel there is no question that Simms has set the standard for other companies to follow. Over the years Simms has offered a wide variety of fishing waders and angler-specific gear, however, to this day the Simms G3 Guide Stockingfoot wader might be the most iconic pair of fishing waders of all time. I bet if you were to take a survey down at Decker I'd venture out to say that more than 75% of the individuals own a pair of the Simms G3 Guide Wader. It sounds corny to say but, these waders are like a fine wine that only gets better with age. So naturally, I thought it would be a good idea to do a review of these bad boys and remind you how the Simms G3 Guide Wader changed the game.
